AlfredGarner Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 I have this simplicity 4212 I brought with the original single wheel trailer grass collector/system. The deck needs a new baffle. My question is best I can get is 40psi on compression check. should I go ahead or should it be rebuilt. Thank you for any answers.
Brettw Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 40 PSI is awfully low. Sounds like a rebuild is in order.
fishnwiz Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 12 hp Briggs motors were used in many tractors over the years. If it were me, I would look for a donor engine from another tractor. 12hp Briggs engines can be had in my area for 50.00 dollars or less. Unless you have the tools and mechanical ability to rebuild the motor yourself, it will cost you more then that to have a shop do the work for you. This is just my opinion. Best of luck.
AlfredGarner Posted June 11, 2014 Author Posted June 11, 2014 Brett&Mark thank you for your quick response. I'am mechanically inclined thanks to many years in electronics and hvac. Anyway I have a 5316 that needs rebuilt along with a deutz-allis 616/48"deck motor needs rebuilt, AC716h motor getting weak and a b10 and b12 I want to get restored. Since I can only tell that compression is low, I was looking at the briggs compression test kit 19545 and it said it uses at 60psi and put the piston at TDC and supply air if gauge reads a slight leak check the head gasket if it leaks more check exhust valve and bypass around piston. Tool is 218.00 plus shipping from briggs. Could'nt I use air thru a regulator and I have an air fitting that will screw into the spark plug threads and do basically the samething and have you guys done a similar test or do you have this tester. And I certainly appreciate your advise.
fishnwiz Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 I use a screw in plug hole type compression tester. You could start by pulling the head and replacing the head gasket. While your in there you can check to be sure both valves are seating properly. There may be some carbon build up on the exhaust valve. Sometimes you can tell if there is gas/air bypass on the head gasket. At least by going this route you minimize your expenses to begin your search for your low compression issues.
AlfredGarner Posted June 11, 2014 Author Posted June 11, 2014 Thank You Mark I will pull the head and check valve seats for carbon buildup.
goatfarmer Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Those vertical 12HP Briggs were used in a LOT of different tractors, under a lot of different names. I'd find a running MTD or Craftsman, and do the swap.
