cey146 Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Desperately need help finding the cause of bearing failure at the rear PTO Group, shown as part #45 on the parts diagram. It has failed three times, and nobody anywhere has been able to diagnose a cause. Thanks for your consideration.
wilm169 Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 it would help to know what bearing you are talking about. If it is the front one you might not be getting the bolt tight enough, it has to pull every thing down tight and lock the bearing to the shaft.
cey146 Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 wilm, Sorry, I tried to include a picture with this post, and didn't get the job done. It is the rear most bearing in the assembly, which fails. The front bolt was torqued to the value given on the diagram. I have posted this on a few of the other forums, and included a couple of photos. Your response gives me confidence that you know about the problem I'm dealing with. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
BLT Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 If you go to the top of this forum and click on "How to upload pictures" by UCD it'll will make you uploading go easier at this site. I use "Irfanview" to resize my pics. There are other picture resizers out there but that just fits my bill..
cey146 Posted June 20, 2014 Author Posted June 20, 2014 BLT,Thanks for the tip. item #45 on the diagram is the bearing which fails. Help!!!8
CleanBee Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 here is a couple engineering ideas. It may be an alignment problem, the shaft no 38 may have burrs, bends, or not balanced. The bearing 45 is not to spec. or that these are not being splash lubercated as needed. I think some of these bearing have a draw type swirl to pull lube towards their back sides. Not sure about this one but I have seen applications where new part numbers do not meet original design specs. Another possibility is that the original bearing spun in the casting and wore the bore outside of spec. It may be a good idea to take your failed bearing to a local machine shop and have them inspect it. Hope this help, Dan
wilm169 Posted June 21, 2014 Posted June 21, 2014 I had one tractor with the shaft #38 had all the flange [knurling] on the outer end striped and had to replace it. Some one might have bent it.
cey146 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 Today, I decided to drop the tiller off of the tractor, in order to get a close look at the problem from the back side. Right away, I noticed a crack in the casting piece which partially covers the bearing in question. The casting is also where the three point hitch top link attaches. After removing the four bolts, I realized the casting has broken in half. This is a whole other case, which I don't believe has anything to do with the bearing failure. This wasn't broken when the bearings failed the previous times. I'll be adding some pictures which show what I found, today. Have yet to tear into it again, from the top side.
