AC710 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 My AC710 3-speed cannot be shifted into gear from neutral without grinding the gears. I have worked on this problem for a while with no success - adjusted belt stops, belt guards, clutch, brake drum, etc. This model has no positive stop for the tranny input pulley, so when in neutral with the clutch depressed it starts spinning. It had a new belt when I bought it. Here is the question. I believe the drive belt is an "A" profile belt. I'm thinking a "B" profile might be stiffer and tend to stop and stand away from the pulleys. What is the recommended type? Does anyone have other suggestions? Belts are pretty cheap at NAPA, so I thought I would try this and see what happens. Hadn't thought of it before researching a belt for the rototiller.
mudpatrol1 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 i use blue kevlar belts from tractor supply on my 710,716,soveriegn,and have had very good luck with them.i would stay away from automotive belts
rokon2813 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 If it has the correct belt, and the trans pulley still spins, your belt stops are not right yet or you have some missing.
Brettw Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Check the belt stops. If they aren't st up correctly that will cause your issue, and it will not go away if they aren't set up correctly.
AC710 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 I have checked, rechecked and experimented with different belt stop and guard settings. They are all there and set up to spec, as I read the manual. I tried to take a pic, but the camera malfunctioned. There is 1 stop wire near the tranny pulley, and a guard around the BGB pulley - that's all. Anyone got a photo of their stops and guards to compare?
BLT Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Belt stop Item 9 should pinch belt when pedal is depressed and prevent any belt movement.
AC710 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 Ah yes, the clutch pulley stop. I have that, too. The combination of parts 9, 19 and 15 should make the belt stand away from the pulleys and provide enough friction to stop the belt, but it doesn't. I will check the belt length - not sure what the PO bought. Some of his other repairs weren't too good. Things are ok when shifting from gear to gear, like forward to reverse, but when it idles in neutral, then the belt won't stop spinning the pulleys to get in gear. Thanks for the help. I will continue to experiment.
AC710 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 Well, I got a new belt. The old one was more worn than I thought, and somewhat stretched. The new belt is stiffer and seems to stop after several revs and some vibration. I think it will work, but you certainly can't get in a hurry to shift into gear. It is interesting that there is almost no resistance whatever in the transmission input pulley when in neutral. It just spins effortlessly. I am thinking it might help to "sharpen" (i.e. square up) that clutch pulley stop so there is more friction on the belt. It is rounded off now from wear. What do you think? I will have a good chance to check it out after tomorrow. I'm getting some dirt delivered and will need to spread it out, grade and rototill. Thanks for your input, guys
