DanD Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Can the PTO side seal (front as it sits in a Sovereign) be replaced without removing the front cover from the engine on a 18 hp Command twin cylinder? Shop manual says simply to remove the old seal and drive in a new one but that is during a complete engine tear down and rebuild. If it's possible, what's the best way to pull the old seal with the crankshaft in place? Put a couple of screws in the old seal and use them to pull on? Thanks for any info.
RayS Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 Yes, it works on Briggs and Lombardini`s as well. Seal pullers work great as well.
DanD Posted June 25, 2014 Author Posted June 25, 2014 Thanks for the response. One quick question though....will a seal puller work with the crankshaft in the way?
Bruker Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 I've used the "screws in the old seal" method before and it works great.
Burntime Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 BLT taught me the 2 screw method on the seal on my sunstrand. Works great!
Brettw Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Make sure to try to determine why the seal went out too. I would look first at a bad breather, just so you you don't put it all together and blow out a seal again. Then again, maybe it's just a bad seal!8D

The seal is a lot bigger in a Lombardini.
maxtorman1234 Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 I've replaced a few on Magnums and Commands using a regular seal puller without issue, usually a quick easy job.
