hitch looks a little off - UH-OH big time

AC710

Recommended Posts

I thought the hitch seemed out of line after some root popping and ripping with the earthcavator. Well, the worst happened - I broke the transmission casting in two places where the hitch bolts attach. It is not leaking, but what can be done to fix the hitch attachment short of replacing half the tranny case? Any ideas would be most appreciated. ThanksThe tractor is an AC-710 3-speed. The upper casting has more hole depth and casting that could possibly be tapped, but the lower one is toast.

I guess I have been able to break something no one else has! Dagnabit! I thought that wheel slippage would give me enough margin of safety for hitting unbreakable roots with a ripper tooth, but the bang was just too much.

I think I have a possible remedy. I will make a flat cutout that fits around the axle bearing housing and bolt it to other frame mounting bolts on the front side of the transmission. It will take some cutting and drilling, but I think it might work, and if it does, would be about as strong as the original.

Well I have done that 2 times now. And I wraped my bolt In plastic good n tight then put it back in place. Then just JB weld it and let is set for a few days cause of how thick it is. Then sand down to look good. And none of my 2 have ever broke since

That would certainly move the stress point forward of the tractor driving force.
id="quote"> Gosh, I would not have thought JB weld would be strong enough for those stress points, but then I have never used JB weld since the 70's, when it was just junk.

i would replace the case half its not that hard to do and it will be worth the look at the keyways and replace as needed. if not the next best thing is welding the pieces back in place drill and retap. but my view if your using a earthcavator with this tractor in the future a jb weld will never hold as well.

Have seen them break there before! And JB weld won't work if your using the hitch. New case is best! To weld correctly cast needs heated up evenly and cool down gradually after welding by a welder that knows cast iron. Putting Longer bolts in will help also. ones in picture seem short? Check other side also!

In the long run I think you would be happier with replacing the case if not too$$$$ and probably not much more time than your fix, which sounds feasible.

If you decide to replace the case, I have one on the shelf, or if you can find something in your area the part number is 157516 and is the same on all these models

Hey everyone, thanks for the input. I have been forest fire fighting in Oregon for the last two weeks, so the tractor is in pieces in my garage. I think I will put it back together using my temporary fix, then maybe see about getting a new case half to install this winter. Parts are non-existent around here (Whitefish, MT) so I will get back to you all with my needs.

I can't re-weld or JB weld the pieces because I don't have them. they have been buried or hauled away before I discovered they were gone. And, I agree that welding would probably not turn out well, anyway.

I will take some pix of my repair and share them here. Right now I need to get it back together. Grandkids are coming wanting to ride, and probably more fire work will take up the summer quickly.

Hi, I'm resurrecting this thread after a busy summer. Here are pix of the repair I built to fix the broken hitch mounts. There is a pic of the bracket cut out of 3/16" steel, and after I installed it on the tractor. I put in longer bolts to compensate for the extra thickness of the repair bracket. I cut off enough of the lower broken casting to allow putting a nut on the shoulder-bolt used for the mower deck lever. I have not tried using the earthcavator, yet, but it should work just fine.
