Points Wire from Coil keeps burning up???

Recommended Posts

So I'm rewiring my Briggs and Stratton 243431 on my Simplicity and I keep burning up my coils, i've gone through 2 now. Basically what happens is I wire up the whole system, then turn the key to start and the wire that comes out of the coil to the wire that goes to the switch and the points keeps burning up. It's almost immediate and when the coils are $40 a piece i'm getting frustrated. Anyone know what could be the cause?

I would guess you have a key switch for a battery ignition that is putting 12 volts on the wire going to the coil. That wire should be grounded when the switch is off and open when the switch is on.
