tiller gearbox lube

The owner manual for my old Simplicity Rotocul front-tine tiller

calls for a special "worm gear lube" in the gearbox.

The Simplicity advertising claims that this special lube is needed

to protect the bronze worm gear.

There is no oil viscosity rating given for this special lube.

This type of lube (in a cold weather formula) is also specified

for walk-behind snow blower gearboxes that use a worm gear.

What do people here use in these gearboxes ... is this special

lube really necessary or can I substitute a gear oil? What viscosity?

Thanks - Tom

If you Google "worm gear lube" a couple of articles will pop up discussing why worm drives usually require special lubricants. Admittedly, most of them are over my head, but you might understand them.

You might take a look at this stuff. It looks like there are several distributors of it in your area.

I have a JCPenny tiller that has a worm gear box also. I just put a few shots of a purple lithium based grease in at the beginning of the year and have never had a problem with it.

Tom, if you look for gear oil, purchase it with the EP or HP notation on it. E= extreme , H= high and P= pressure or high pressure oil. Worm and hypoid gears, by design, want to squeeze lubrication off their working surfaces and E-H Pressure lube have additives that cling to thr gears to make for better lubrication and little wear.

My Earthquake tiller has worm gears in it and it calls for OO liquid grease. Easy to find online but the local parts and farm stores claim I don't know what I'm talking about and there is no such thing.

That Lubriplate product is offered by Walmart.com for $85 per quart!

I did see it listed on other sites for less, but it is still a lot

of money for a quart of gear lube! The Simplicity product is about

$6 per quart from our club sponsors.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
