repower 7117 22HP

Hello, I recently ordered a harbor freight 22HP predator engine( item # 61614) To repower a 7117 that I bought in the Spring . While waiting for the engine, I re painted the tractor ,did poor mans steering upgrade .and replaced a missing hydraulic line and a new seat. Yesterday the motor finally arrived. HF 's packaging is not the best . I removed the engine from the box, it had turned sideways as if it spent some time on its side. The engine has 3 mounting hole on the flywheel end to mount the drive shaft adapter which has 4 bolt holes. I thought about drilling three holes in the adapter but the center casting interferes . I am gong to make an adapter from a 4inch washer 1\2 inch thick I will countersink the 3 holes and bolt it on the engine then thread the four holes and bolt on the Kohler adapter. I have to raise the engine up 5\8thsto get proper drive shaft alignment as far as the electrical that will come in time. Thanks Ken in Mi

I cant wait to watch this come together. I completely dismissed HF when generator shopping, but finally had a coworker give a great personal review, and began to review them.

Their gensets, and specifically the Predator engines, have years of great reviews...thousands of reviews from homeowners to industrial professionals. I was shocked at the great service they seem to provide and so I bought a 13hp version. I hope yours and mine see decades of service.

Hello, I want to test it first before committing to making some adapters.

The engine looks nice with oil filter & oil cooler, muffler include is a big plus.

I have not found any info on charging system ?

Thanks Ken in Mi

Very interesting! Was thinking of doing the same thing now I will watch your progress and see how it goes, while saving my nickels and dimes to get a motor.

Hello, today I mounted the adapter to the engine and lifted it in place there was a 1\4 inch gap between the adapter and the drive shaft I loosened up the driveshaft mount at the BGB and it will fit fine . My next dilema is the debris screen the one that came on the engine is plastic so when I cut out a 4inch cicle to accommodate the driveshaft rubber bushing it got more flimsy. a will make a metal one from some perforated steel . I am concerned about debris getting in.? If anyone has any hints or observations please chime in. I used the plate from a triad to raise the engine the proper amount.

I have been to Harbor Freight and I have always thought their Preadator Engines look just like Hondas. Are they Hondas in disguise? Keep the news coming:D!!

Hello, Tpday I finally got he engine mounted in the tractor all went well, it bolted right up to drive shaft . I will need longer throttle and choke cables. I have not set the hood on yet, the predator muffler is 16 1\2 inches wide, it may be an issue. I will tackle the wiring next , the KT 17 that was in there before had points ignition and this is electronic. Any suggestions as to which ignition switch I need?

Hello, Today I mounted the hood to see If it would fit the muffler exit pipe interfered so I notched the side of the hood ! the muffler is wider than the stock 7117 mufler and is farther forward there is no room for the head lights ( maybe side pods)

Ken,

I put one of these Cree off road lights on my Gravely 2-wheeler (they never offered headlights on these tractors) and the 1260 Lumens is blinding. Perhaps you could make a couple of metal filler "blanks" where the originals were, then mount these into them? That way, there'd be no additional hacking/hole drilling on the hood? The mounting bracket adjusts 180 degrees.

Hello, I want to get it running first to see how much heat is put out by the muffler. (Think paint blistering), before I put decals or mount headlights

I am waiting on longer throttle and choke cables and ignition switch to arrive . Until then I will mount the rear lift and cable and sort out the wiring

Thanks Ken in Mi

Its hard to tell by the pics, could you mount the engine back an inch or so, then shorten the manifolds to bring the muffler back? Otherwise you could also mount the hood forward just a little to make some space up too. Worst case use a different muffler. It can be done, just how much do you want to put into it... Looks good!

You did some pretty handy work on the lathe. How about some spacers to move the headlights out say 3/4 of an inch or so? That may still try to retain a stock appearance and get er done!dOd

Hello, I tried to keep it as simple as possible ,the driveshaft & triad mounting plate dictates the engine location. When I repowered my other sovereign with a 16 hp vanguard, I built my own muffler. One of the features of the Predator engine is it came with muffler. hopefully next week it can be started and test drive!

Thanks Ken in Mi

Very cool...had no idea HF could be trusted for engines. I've had too many cheap tools fail. Glad to hear their engine/gen line is well liked. Great job with the repower so far. I hope you can save the lights...if not some 7000 series side pods may look cool on a 7100 sm01
