'69 2110 LL Repower.

Had a lot of problems, with the valves on a '69 LL 10HP. the Exhaust is super stuck in place. the Intake will allow me to press it down, but won't close, and neither has any appreciable opening movement. perhaps stuck stems in the guides, and weak springs.

P82A04111.jpg

Rather than go through the grief of correcting multiple issues, I obtained a 12 HP (from a B212) from a member.two weeks ago, I drained the oil sump, and removed the mounting screws.Had to come out in any event to clean the "critter Clutter" out of the fan chamber. This will make 1 9HP, and 2 10HP engines on the front porch.Tonight I set up some rigging and removed the 10 HP. Set it aside to investigate at a later date. Good winter inside project.

10HP_coming_out.jpg

Next on the task chart, is to clean the frame, and wait for Fastenal to call.Wayne

id="quote">id="quote">Dave just made sure that the foot pegs would clear the ladder legs, and that there was enough height, and distance to clear the frame. left me enough room to "swing" the block once I had it in the air!As usual, had some issue with the excess chain getting snagged in the dardest places (even my stepping on it at times! then there was the sump drain !!! ARGGG!But she is out and on the hand truck, w/o any strain to my back!the block did tip over once, due to the weight of the S/G, so it was "lift it again to right it". left just enough room between the legs to get the hand truck through, also. Got a bit dark last night, by the time the engine was clear of the frame, so I took some quick pics on my way to have lunch with my GF...the engine on the hand truck...

I'm glad you abandoned the original engine Buddy. All I saw were headaches with it, and making a swap is so much easier in the interim. Keep on Keepin on Buddy! Say hello to Lucky for me.

Zip,

It had to come out anyway to clean the cooling chamber. So the Princess will come back to life, stronger than before. So I best get back to the

job at hand.

Wayne,

Will the bottom of the grill frame clear the balance gear case on that 12 hp? I ran into that problem with the hydro LL that I built. It was a Simp. 101 in it's early life. It may not be the same frame as yours.

Clean up your main frame and sit the 12 in there with a couple of bolts. They don't need to be tight. Try your grill frame. Some guys cut the grill frame, but I went to a 16hp. It fit just fine. Just trying to save you some frustration. I had my 12 installed and all hooked up. One of those "dag-nabbit" moments.

Good project Wayne, I think the 12hp is my favorite Briggs engine. Very Smooooth (if the counterweights are timed right) sm01

With everything on the front porch, and using the HFT bearing separation kit, It was an easy task to pull the shroud, rxcept where the PO used a round headed sloted 1/4-20 screw on one of the mounts on the backing plate. That had to be drilled out.Once in there, I removed the "critter clutter" (re-purposed a pizza box to contain it in one place)

69_crud_1.jpg

A closer look at that huge lump of junk...

69_crud_2.jpg

That lump was JAMMED in the opening in the casting around the valves. Also ran across this large washer like plate bolted to the flywheel (it is not shown or listed in the IPLs for these engines).

BigWasher.jpg

More discovery during autopsy...1. GREEN - Coil removed or disintegrated into the "crud".2. RED - non-ferric fin ready to break loose.

Train_wreak_1.jpg

Found loose in the YUCK! a piece of the non-ferric backing off of flywheel, and the flywheel nut locking plate.

Train_wreak_3.jpg

While all the tools were at hand I took advantage, to clean the shroud on my '68 10HP.

68_10HP.jpg

That one spins, piston and valves move easily!Might fix it as a spare or "flip" it. My '66 engine was already stripped down to obtain parts for Dennis (Shovelhead), but some parts remain; flywheel, coil?, oil breather, cylinder head, oil sump, etc.All three backing plates are ok. The '66 shroud is "toast, but the '68 and '69 shrouds can be repaired.

HELLO HOUSTON!Not landing today! A quick look at the "business end" (flywheel) threw me a curve, totally different pulley and drive shaft connection...removed the pulley, and went inside to take some measurements, which negated the issues I thought I had, when I "eyeballed" it outside.

P82A05121.jpg

The 12HP pulley in foreground; every thing associated to a 10HP pulley in the background. The drive-shaft bolt spacing is 2.5" for both! Pheew!!Double checked the pulley for the B&S 14HP (scheduled to go in the '68 2110), and it is identical to the 12HP. Moved the 12HP onto the front porch, ahead of the Tuesday-Wednesday rains. Ducked out of the 48* wind chill (10-12mph), to clean and chase the threads on the mounting hardware. Might even pull the shroud to see if I can locate the model/type/code stamping, which is not visible on the exterior. I also have to get under the tractor, and loosen the rear yoke into the BGB. (that might be fun).

id="quote">00:30 and it's 36*, hardly any wind now! You are a tad further into the clouds than I am, Tim. Supposed to go into the mid 50s later today. But, I did my annual thing, and moved my "rattle cans" down to the basement for the winter. Garage is not heated. (just a covered wind break!) LOL

Spent the morning running around the Lehigh Valley area, and repairing the mixing valve on the heater. By the afternoon the temp moved into the 50s. Finally set up the rigging again with some minor changes to gain more space between the ladders...

P82A05131.jpg

Following the cautions by JimDK (above). I made sure to place the mounting bolts loosely in their respective holes in the sump flanges. I removed the pipe nipple and cap to make the placement easier. The result of this was a nice puddle of oil and sludge (which should have been drained before shipment)!

P82A05141.jpg

Made sure that all hardware, which will be inaccessable later, was torqued to specification, removed the rigging, stored my tools, found the best V-belt, to be ready for the S/G mounting. Covered the engine in preparation for the upcoming 3-4 days of rain. Getting dark earlier these days,(by about an hour), and as the light goes away so does the temperature. [good time to put the batteries on charge]Yet to come is the attachment of the driveshaft, tightening the mounting bolts, installing the grill frame, flushing the sump w/ kerosene, adding fresh oil, and mounting the S/G.That's all for Monday Folks!
