Buddy is asking about finding a used replacement Dana 5 speed transmission for a Sears lawn tractor. Can anyone give some information about the usage of these transmissions in other brands/models and/or general availability?

TIA

Carl, as you know Sears barely made anything. If you can get tractor product number, ie XXX.XXXXXXX we can determine who made and with any luck, the transmission manufacter.

There are lots of differences in LT transmissions due to shifter locations, brake locations, etc. They are not very complex. Is it repairable or is the housing broken?

Dana was one of the subs of Techumseh, and was loosely tied to the Peerless transaxle products. these were used in Simplicity (like 4212s), MTDs, JDs, Murrays, Toro, and so on...

There are usually several to be found on Ebay.

some examples...

On the lower RH side of the housing should be a model# stamped on a plate (just under the disk brake assy.)

Even used/rebuilds bring a healthy $ (as much as $500).

If the housing is intact, SOME parts are still available through Husky dealers. NOTE - the housing will be packed, about 2/3 full of Bentonite lubricant. they do not run on regular gear grease. White Lithium (NAPA) is a recognized substitute.

The tractor is a Sears 917.255470 with a Dana 5 speed transmission part number 4360-47. About all I know about it.

Thanks Wayne, that gives us some bread crumbs to follow up on.
