johnb110 0 Posted January 19, 2002 I took my 10 h.p. (243431) landlord out for it's first job of throwing snow last night. All was going great for about 10 feet of blowing when a mighty backfire occured and she quit. I just overhauled the motor , replaced ignition parts, cleaned up head and valves as best I could without dissasembling. It would start and run without even hearing it turn over before this happened. There seems to be good spark, it will fire the very odd time but not start. It's getting lots of fuel, floods like crazy if I try too hard to get it started. I took the head off again and everything looks O.K. that I can see. She is a bit of an oil burner and I did dump a bit of intant pistons in just before I ran it. Could something have happened to the timing when it backfired. Anyway any suggestions on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. Thanx in advance., long time member John
Kent 436 Posted January 19, 2002 Easiest check it to make sure something didn't bridge the gap on your spark plug or the porcelain isn't cracked. A piece of carbon or dirt could have fouled the plug. Then, if you have good spark, I'd check the flywheel. Sounds like the flywheel may have come loose, sheared a pin, or something, causing it to jump time. There's certainly others who know a whole lot more than me about these, but if you have spark to the plug and fuel to it... sounds like it has to be the plug or timing. jlasater 338 Posted January 19, 2002 The basics needed for an engine to run are: Fuel Air Spark at the right moment So if you have fuel in the car, and a spark, chances are the timing is off via a partially/fully sheared flywheel keep. Try spinning the crankshaft around by hand and see if it kicks back when it hits compression. That'll give you a rough idea as to if it has enough compression to run. I've fixed two freebie tractors by just replacing the $0.50 flywheel key, much to the chagrin of the previous owners :-)[A href='http://www.wheatfarm.com']http://www.wheatfarm.com[/a]
