BGB Oil Volume

Recommended Posts

I recently replaced the BGB on my AC 416H after it exploded. I picked one up off ebay and I was very please with its condition on arrival. The only real different is on the back plate. My original BGB had a plug on the back that you would remove and just fill it until it came out the back plug. This new BGB doesn't have this plug on the back but the filler plug has a dipstick on it. My question is how much oil to put it. Currently the oil is about half way up the dipstick but it's leaking from the front seal so I assume I've put too much in. Do I just fill it until it touches the very bottom of the dipstick?

Right out of service book:

"Fill bevel gear box with Simplicity multi-purpose

hydraulic/transmission oil. Pour fluid slowly and check

level often. Gearbox is full when level reaches top of filler

pipe elbow (older models) or tip of filler plug — dipstick

(newer models).";)

It didn't actually explode, but it was a pretty catastrophic failure. The bearings for the cross shaft let go and both bevel gears got chewed up badly. The shaft then destroyed the housing after the bearings let loose. There was no saving this BGB without machining new bearing holes and getting over sized bearings I suppose. I saved it but not sure what I'll do with it.

Good morning peeps! I’m always searching for helpful information with my AC collection. Hope to find out new information and pass on my own experience in restoration. Here are some pics of my babies. I’m still looking for front rims for the 410 so yesterday I put the 310 wheels on took it for a drive. Working pretty good but still needs some carb work. Gotta get the 310 running next. Have a great day!😁
