Sheared Key

I'm working on my ancient Gilman walk-behind rototiller with a tiny Briggs engine; 2 to 3 hp. I had no spark and found, when I pulled the flywheel, that the key had sheared.:(! Put in a new key and after cleaning the points and readjusting, reassembled and gave it a go. Kicked for just a moment, then nothing more. When I disassembled to try a Nova II, I found the new key sheared!sm00

The shaft and flywheel need to be clean and free of any oils. Then they have to be properly torqued. Not sure of what the torque is for that engine, but I know they can shear keys if not snugged up properly.

That's surely it, I just snugged it up. I have no flywheel nut, just the rope-pull thing that screws on. Am I missing a nut? Thanx, Dave
