steering play

Got at least 1" play on steering wheel before tires turn, teeth look good on steering (landlord2110)-what could be the cause?

1) key way on the left spindle,

2) ball joint on each end of the steering drag link

3) key way on the steering arm under the tractor

4) key way in the lower steering gear (pie shaped gear)

5) worn bushing in the other steering gear (round one)

6) all of the above.

1" is not a lot, I've seen them with nearly a 1/4 turn of the wheel.

I would start by standing beside it to watch, turn the steering wheel back and forth in the slop area and see what moves and what doesn't.

Everything Dan (Rokon) mentioned is generally part of the problem. Also, if it's got the wedge-shaped steering gear, make sure your eccentric pin is adjusted so that the teeth on the wedge-shaped gear are meshed up tight with the teeth on the pinion gear.Another thing that happens is that the slot in the wedge-shaped gear that the eccentric pin fits into "wallers" out over time, creating quite a bit of play. Look at the bottom edge of the gear compared to the edge of the board in my pics, and imagine that amount of play amplified out to the end of the steering wheel:

An easy way to fix that is to grind a flat spot on the end of the wedge-shaped gear, then drill and tap it to accept 2 bolts that can be tightened down to remove the slop:

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
