powermax_paul 1 Posted January 23, 2002 The things I want at an auction usually sell 3 to 4 hours after I get there. By that time my wife has the van full. I can't afford that kind of time, either. If this guy is going to repair for resale, I'd rather do the repairs myself, so I know they're done to my satisfaction. At $42 per hour, (my T&M rate) I could work four hours instead of driving 200 miles (100 mi each way). That's $168 not including mileage. At $0.30 per mile, That's another $60, for a total cost of $228 to save $200. Factor in the cost of repairs, if I do them? I tink there's a lot of variables. MPH 12 Posted January 23, 2002 With the recent wave of posts regarding value, worth, and availability of Simplicity stuff, here’s another hypothetical that may produce interesting responses. Facts: A) There’s a guy in your town that sells tractors and attachments. The guy has just the attachment you have been looking for. The attachment is perfect, and he wants $300. You learn that this guy buys most of the stuff he sells from an auction house that is about 100 miles away. He never pays more than $100 for an attachment. He brings the attachments home, tests them, and repairs if necessary. B) There’s an ad in the paper for the same type attachment. The seller doesn’t know anything about the condition of the attachment, and wants $200. The attachment is located 100 miles away. Would you do?: 1) Pay $300 to the local guy for the attachment you know is good. 2) Travel 100 miles hoping the $200 attachment is good. 3) Keep going to the auction until you can buy an “As-Is” attachment for less than $100. gr-made 0 Posted January 23, 2002 In my opinion there is no non-powered attachment is worth that kind of money. I would keep my eyes and ears open and eventually you will find what you are looking for, for much less money.
MPH 12 Posted January 23, 2002 That would depend on how long I be wanting or "needed" the item. I would lean towards supportting the local guy..MPH
Brent_Baumer 5 Posted January 23, 2002 Eric, This is only a hypothetical. I didn't specify what type of attachment. Everyone can imagine anything they want. I also stated, "Less than $100" at auction. Gee, I thought you were the same "gr-made" who recently sold a Tiller on eBay for $127.50, and had no-sale on a Revitalizer that only brought $101. Some folks must think I'm a drunkin' sailor the way I spend on attachments.
JohnN 0 Posted January 23, 2002 It all depends on how much money I have and how desperate I am for the attachment. Also concerning the “guy”, your not just paying for the attachment, your paying for his time to go to the auction, bring stuff back, test, and fix it if necessary. What it amounts to is paying for a convenience and is that worth $200 extra, to some yes, to some no and to me… maybe (see first statement). I think going to an auction would be interesting. You could possibly pick up an attachment or tractor that isn’t really needed but would be nice to have at a low price. If anyone knows of a place in the NJ, NY, PA area that auctions things like that let me know. John
mowerman1193 0 Posted January 23, 2002 I guess it would depend on the price of the total amount of cash I would have in the tractor and attachments.I am the winner of the tiller on Ebay and I wanted the revitalizer also but only had the money for the tiller. The revitalizer had a reserve that did not get met(I was hoping for that) because I thought if I could win the tiller then I could make a deal on the revitalizer while I was there(which I did).I dont usually pay that much for stuff but..I look at it as a whole package...I gave 15.00 for my Broadmoor 717 with deck, snow thrower, and snow blade and 20.00 for the 728 and another 10.00 for the deck.So I have all this with the tiller and revitalizer for less than I would of payed for my new rear tine tiller I was going to get this spring. And now have the joy of yet using my tractor for something more than just mowing and cleaning the snow from the driveway. mowerman1193[A href='www.geocities.com/mowerman1193/index.html']www.geocities.com/mowerman1193/index.html[/a]
