First Jim, welcome to the club. There are many here much more knowledgeable then me when it comes to repairs, but the points are going to be behind the flywheel. A few handtools, some intestinal fortitude, and time is all you'll need. Without spark, I would start by replacing the the points and condenser, because they're cheap. If that doesn't do it, then you may need to replace the coil/armature. I don't know how to test these items, so I just throw parts at any problem I run across.^ As for the ability to post pictures, I believe you need to be a dues paying member. Best $10 I ever spent. Good Luck, Dave

Welcome to the club.

Unless you are a paying member you cannot post pictures directly to the club however you can link them with a picture hosting site like photo bucket or flickr.

3314 should have a cast iron briggs. Forward of and slightly lower than the carburetor is a box, roughly 1 1/2" by 3" with 2 screws. Points are in there.

If it truly did run when parked, points will be the number one cause of no spark. Number 2 is probably mouse chewed wires behind the flywheel shroud.

If the tractor is original, a toggle switch on the dash would be for lights. Should be a key switch, with only 1 wire. That wire grounds the points to kill the engine and should be attached at or near the points box.

If cleaning the points does not get you spark, try disconnecting that wire to be sure the switch is working. There is another wire attached there also, you need that one, it goes behind the shroud to the coil.

toggle switch could be for lights or electric lift

But as Brett found out sometimes it can be on/off switch for ignition

First trick with the points is to put a piece of note paper between the points, rotate the engine by hand until the points close and pull the piece of paper out. This will clean the points, any dirt or especially oil on the points will not create a spark. Set the point gap at .020.

2.) Try new spark plug.

3.) Replace points and condenser.

4.) Last resort is to pull engine and fix/replace magneto.

Note: this is assuming that all wiring is correct like rokon2813 described.

I think i got the bug this is my 3rd dOd

Welcome to the club!dOd

Clean and set the points again and replace the condenser. Should fix the spark issue. Alot of times a fresh condenser will fix your spark issue.

As stated, you could have a chewed wire and plug wire is jumping to ground before reaching the plug.

Best of luck !!

Looking at the pictures this tractor has or at least had an electric lift. You do not have a manual lift handle, and I can see the mounting bolts for the electric lift cradle. The toggle on the left side of the steering is for the lift. There is a pointer on the left side quadrant (just above the left foot rest) that shows the position of the lift. the pictures shows it is in the full up position for the mower deck or the down position for the rear lift.

Yes it does have electric lift. yesterday put the new points gap at 20 got fire8) ran for little bit carb issues as when drains the carb did not look to good and the elect lift was not working so today got throttle cable reconnected took gas tank out cleaned lift out clean and working now and cleaning all around it's coming along gave a friend the carb to clean but we were looking at it under the air filter there is two inch hole that we think is missing a cover and another smaller above is that for a PVC

The 2 inch hole is probably where the welch plug goes. They tend to fall out. I think you can buy one for under $5. The smaller hole above would be for a rubber hose going to the valve cover, yes PCV.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well it looks like I will getting another. things are moving a little slow on the 3314 but finely getting the carb back buddy took it to make that Welch plug and a rebuild, but he got hurt at work but IT'S DONE! So when I went looking for parts for the 3314 I saw a old lawn tractor with no hood and no seat so drove up and honked he came out and turns out to be a 3415h a little ruff but has the deck, hood two more back wheels/tires and a the tiller that came with it been sitting again! Two years he wants 200$ for all. question. will the tiller fit the 3314 and should I part it out 3415., and how much for 3415 mower & deck ? oh and this guy said that the place I went to look for parts that day for the 3314 the lady has a 3415h with a sickle mower on it. What is that worth , in so so shape pics coming soon

I do not know exactly what a sickle bar mower is worth, but I know they are one of the most collector wanted attachments. There is a guy I know that has one in his back yard but he doesn't want to sell it8C. I REALLY want one though. If it were me, I would get one tractor running good with parts from other parts tractors, and preferably put the hydro transmission in the good tractor, unless the Variable is in good working order. Then, you can have a bunch of attachments that work on a good running tractor. Yes, it may take some money, but it will pay off! These are VERY reliable tractors. Just keep oil levels up and clean.....it will live longer than you will.

GOOD LUCK! :)

That looks to be in amazing condition! Nice find. And I definitely agree that drinking beer goes right along with working on them.
