JayB 0 Posted January 25, 2002 I have a B-210 that I just bought for parts, just for curiosity I wanted to see if it ran but first I went to change the oil. Can't change the oil because there is no drain plug in the oil pan??? I've worked on plenty of these engines and never had this problem, it looks like it's been apart, can someone tell me why it would not have a plug?
SmilinSam 4,242 Posted January 25, 2002 Should have one on one end or the other. Don't know of a Briggs pan that did not have one. Some of the Kohlers hadd one on the bottom of the pan but not the Briggs that I'm aware of. Normally the B-series is right under the oil fill /Check unless its a newer engine that has the 3" dipstick in which case the drain plug would be on the opposite side of the frame without an opening in the frame to get to it. I HAVE seen that done before. I don't know how they thought they were going to drain it like that without taking the engine loose. Sam
PatRarick 1 Posted January 25, 2002 The drain plug can be at either end on this engine, as the pan can be installed either way. Most likely, whoever did the engine work installed the pan wrong and did not know it, or did not want to remove the engine to correct the problem. MPH 12 Posted January 25, 2002 If its not OEM engine, both the briggs on my gilsons have the drain plug on the bottom. Maybe whoever put the engine in didn't believe in changing oil or sucked it out..MPH
JayB 0 Posted January 26, 2002 The engine has the dipstick in the block and the pan has the castings there for the fill and drain plug but just wasn't finished (factory error??). It is installed in the right direction, oh well, Ill figure it out eventually. Thanks all Jay
PatRarick 1 Posted January 26, 2002 The castings are on each end, but only finished on one. Pat
Kent 436 Posted January 26, 2002 My 1989 replacement engine, a 10HP 243431, has the dipstick on the right side, and the drain plug on the left. I had to cut out a small area of the frame to allow access to the drain plug. I didn't try taking the pan off and reversing it -- would that have been an alternative with the dipstick?
