Can a cast iron 243431 10 HP Briggs and Stratton be rebuilt to 300421 12 hp specs ( bore and stroke) and if so is the cam and head any different?

thanks

The bore is attainable, but you run into a balance problem as 11 HP and above (30CID+) have a balance weight. I forgot if bigger rod is needed as stroke should be the same.

welcom to the Club Kevin,

I do not know what my 243431 would be rated as. Inadvertently, when my sons threw a rod, and I took it into a local machine shop, The manager in the shop said the cylinder was out of round, and wanted to bore it to true it up. he provided me with a shopping list to get the parts from a B&S parts dealer; such as over sized piston, rings to match, new rod, crank bushings, wrist pin, valves, and valve guides. Since he did not call for a longer rod, There was no change from the existing head. they did have to turn the crank cause that is where the rod seized.

It ran great since then, until the coil went south, and I had to install an external automotive coil.

Then in March 2012, I pulled the engine to clean out the rodent nests, and install a hydro Lift. i purchased a 14HP B&S from RayS, and it became a complete refurb-repower project.

The flywheels can be repolarized and converted easily to modern electronic ignition for less than $50 if you ever need to. I do it to all of mine as a rule when I get them. The rods are different, but should be cross compatible.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
