v stands for varispeed .split pulleys spread and change your speed when using speed lever they are not the best . your hydrostatic is the one you want for tilling .

If the vari-speed pulleys are in good shape (little slop in the 3 pins on the pulleys) it will work just fine with a rototiller.

1st gear and 1 on the quadrant is nice and very slow.

Download the directions for setting up the Vari-speed, follow the directions closely and in order (hopefully someone here at SimpleTrACtors will post it here for you).

Problems with Vari-speed in order of frequency:

1.) Vari-speed is not set up properly.

2.) Worn (too narrow) belt, or wrong belt. They are expensive.

3.) Pulleys and linkages are worn out.

I still have a 3314V that I bought in 1971 with 2390 hrs on same engine and have rebuilt the varible speed one time in 44 years. I agree that proper adjustment is necessary as the moving split pulleys are used over time causing wear. I keep the moving parts slightly oiled and that helps with the wear. I also have 3212H with the Vickers Hydro and has been a tough unit. Leaks a little ,keep check on fluid level and it keeps on pulling. When I bought the 3314V I opted for the mechanical Vari-speed as it is easy to maintain. AS it turns out I would probably go with hydro now . I converted a 3310V tractor over to a Sunstrand 15 and it really a smooth pulling strong tractor.

The 3300 series is a one year only. But Simplicity put vari-drives in from about 1967 through 1970 30XX, 31XX, 32XX, as FDT (Foot Dragging Tractor) and in 1971 the 33XX as the first year RBT (Running Board Tractor). In 1972 the series was called 34XX, I don't recall any 3400 series vari-drives.
