Differential support calls for VC-3 to be put on new seals (page 134 of repair manual). It also mentions it in several other places in this book. I also called and went to see my dealer who has never heard of VC-3. Thanks for your help!

Dutch, The notes specifically say not to use permatex because it will leak due to the pressure of the case. Like I said in the previous reply, I can't think of any bolts that pass thru high pressure hydraulic areas. I would think permatex would work fine though. Paul

I found a NASA datasheet that describes VC-3 (Vibra-Tite) as being a silicone & acrylic composition. Mostly, I use Permatex and Loctite products (same company) simply because they're more readily available in my area. Products have been developed, discontinued, renamed, and have evolved and become more specialized since your 4040 was made. Just pick the most appropriate modern product for the application.

The Permantex Corp. makes dozens of products. Permatex #nnn, Permatex "this", Permantex "that". I don't know what simple "Permatex" refers to. For example, I sure wouldn't use Permatex RTV if Permatex #2 was called for, and visa versa.

Herb, I think simple "Permatex" is about like simple "oil" instead of calling it lubicant. Its just been around I'd guess since sticky stuff was needed..MPH

Herb, Keep in mind WHEN this note was written (early 70's?). Probably only was one kind of permatex then. Paul
