Repower Allis 416H ???

Looking for any information on repowering an Allis Chalmers 416H.

The original engine is a Kohler K341 and while going up a steep incline appears to have burned something up in the engine when the oil all tipped to the back. It began smoking real bad and I switched it off but could hear the telltale sounds of engine damage even as she was spinning down.

I see a lot of people are using the Vanguard horizontal shaft engines on their Simplicity tractors but have not found any information on anyone doing a repower on a 400 series Allis. I cannot afford to buy a new Vanguard engine but can look for a used one if I know what it will take to make it work in the tractor and maintain the front PTO.

Suggestions of any other engines that would work with minor modifications would be great as well.

Allis built Homelites were powered by Briggs 12 or 16 HP single cylinder engines. They also had front engine mounted PTOs to drive the exact same mower decks as the Allis 300/400 series tractors. The engines are fairly available so it would be a fairly easy repower.

I am considering a rebuild but have not yet been able to open up the engine and see what damage was done. If it is not too bad I can possibly rebuild it but I don't know when I will have to the time to do it. I figured if I can find out which engines will fit with the least amount of modification I could keep an eye open on CL for something coming up with a reasonable price.

There have been plenty of inexpensive tractors with Kohler Vanguard V Twins in them but that will require a lot of other mods I do not have time for to make everything work.

The problem is you either need time to do the work yourself or the money to pay someone else to do it and both are in short supply right now.

I have a couple of 12hp B&S horizontal shaft engines here I could work with but I do not know what is involved yet to make them fit. I was just hoping someone else had done a swap and could list out the things to watch for or how they worked around issues like connecting up the drive shaft and front PTO, etc.

I would hate to drop the tractor down to 12 or 12.5HP from 16 as well. Going up is good, down not so much. :)

First step I guess is getting the tractor back where I can look over the damage but my two running tractors are currently at another location and all the ones at my home are down for repair.

One with a leaky pin to the points so the points keep getting oil on them, one with a hydro pump I am in the middle of rebuilding and one with a bad BGB that I am in the middle of replacing.

Too many projects. Guess if I ever get to retire I will have plenty to keep me busy. :)

Kohlers use a battery ignition. So converting a Briggs to that or the tractor to a Briggs ignition would be one obstacle.

I also vote to rebuild the Kohler. Hard to beat an old cast iron K series for being darn near bulletproof. Parts are out there and plentiful. Even if you need a new crank. Most likely it will need the crank turned undersize on the rod journel, a new rod, new rings and maybe a rebore with a oversize piston head. Wont know till you open it up and take some measurments and see what damage was done. Make sure you check the camshaft endplay when you reassemble the engine. Many guys miss that and the engine has the "Kohler rattle" at the mid rpms as the cam slaps back and fourth in the block. Mike

To put one of your Briggs engines in will require the Briggs drive shaft adaptor if you don't have it (different than the existing Kohler). And change the ignition switch or put in a relay to work for a mag ignition vs the Kohler battery ignition. The mounting holes in the tractor are the same, as is the centerline of the engine. The front clutch should be able to be adapted.

Just picked this up only thing could find was that k341 what HP is it was cheap guy was going to put on a wood splitter. and 250$ in to it and ran it but never finished the project

dOd All K341 are 16hp. Looks like the correct pan for your 416. You will need to swap some parts off from your original engine. Fan shroud, starter, (looks like the notch is there in the back plate for the starter), etc.

Saw a 13E7 also stamped that you can't see in the first picture with the pull start thinking this was used as a generator or a pump?
