BGB Rebuild HELP!

Gary

Recommended Posts

Started reassembling the BGB, out of my 917H. Grandson was "helping". I noticed that what was once the driven gear, is now the drive gear. These gears are helical cut, and show minor signs of wear. I realize that they are cut in a specific direction for a reason. My question is: Do I need to switch these gears to their original position, or, will they function properly installed as is?

My concerns are: Proper oil splash in the case. Noise in the BGB. Premature wear of the gears. Excessive thrust against bearings.

I know, it seems easy enough to remove and reinstall "correctly", but, if it absolutely doesn't make any difference, I'll leave them as they are.

Thanks for your experience, and thoughts.

Yes, indeed! LOL. I enjoy his company, and "help". I should have done a better job of checking it over, before reassembly. Was fortunate to catch it before finishing it up. Saw the cut on the driven gear that the ring rides in, when I took it off of the drive shaft.

Installed all new bearings and seals. Installed a new driven shaft. Very, very little backlash (probably less than 1/16"), and very, very little end play (probably less than 1/32"). I'd call it as good or better than new.:D To say I'm happy with it, would be an understatement. Painted it Satin Black. Also chased the mounting holes with a tap. Wire brushed the bolts, and test fit them in the holes.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
