AC B207 Chrome Bumper

Recommended Posts

What's the best method to beat a chrome bumper back into shape without cracking the chrome? The bumper has some signs of abuse and I'd like to straighten it but don't want to crack and chip the chrome plating. Any Ideas? Paul

Paul, Use hydraulic press. Protect chrome with carpet & wood.

If it's a one of a kind I'd bring it to a bumper repair shop. They use a press of some sort to bring them back into shape and then rechrome. Sometimes, with slow steady pressure they'll go into shape without the plating coming off. Beating them into shape with a sledge is not going to save your chrome. I've had good results with just leaving them mounted and hook a chain to them at the point of impact and slowly pull trying to reproduce the opposite angle of the hit with a helper to tell you when to stop and then with pulling pressure on the bumper, trying to tweak a little or by removing to beat out any small areas with a 2X4 or plywood between the bumper and the sledge for a cushion. A big dead blow hammer might work best. It's touch and go whether the plating will stay on though. Some bumpers you can just tell it won't work and others are just better for it. If it's something you really want repaired correctly ask any body shop where they bring their bumpers. It's usually less than $100 for repairs with re-plating. Sandy

If you don't have a press. Find a good spot under your pickup truck on the frame and use Dutch's method with a regular Hydraulic Jack..
