huffy 2 Posted September 8, 2015 I've been having a landscaping service mow my lawn, as I've been out of town most of the summer because my dad's been in the hospital for the past 3 months. He finally got released late last week, and I flew home on Saturday. Sunday morning I was going to mow the lawn myself for the first time all summer. Incidentally, the way our weather's been going I think it would also have been the last time it would need to be mowed this year. I thought the Legacy, which has been resting all summer, would enjoy finally getting to stretch her legs a bit. Evidently she didn't. 30 minutes into it the PTO shaft bearings blew apart. I was mowing along when all of a sudden I noticed one of the pto belts laying in the grass. Shut her down and opened the hood, and noticed that the splined pto shaft thing that goes through the front axle was loose. Took it up to the garage and pulled it all apart, and found that those bearings that bolt onto each side of the axle were both broken to pieces. The flange hickies that hold them on were broken to bits. Not sure what coulda caused that, other than age. Oh well. Hopefully my new bearings get here so that I can get it back up and running before the snow starts flying, cause the blower won't work without that pto shaft. But, given how long it took for Jack's to get parts from Simplicity the last few times I ordered something, who knows if that'll happen.
CarlH 419 Posted September 9, 2015 If the PTO from a Sunstar would work, I have one I could loan you
Gary 101 Posted September 9, 2015 Just a possibility: If it had been washed prior to leaving it sit for that long, moisture could have gotten into a bearing and formed enough rust to seize the bearing. It's happened to me.
huffy 2 Posted September 16, 2015 Got an e-mail today saying my parts have been shipped. So hopefully I'll be able to get it put back together this weekend. Gary: that makes sense. Since I haven't used it all summer, some moisture from last winter's snow blowing duties probably rusted the bearings up. I'll be more careful next time; things were pretty hectic this spring/summer, and I frankly didn't even think about the tractor until this happened.
