Dutch 4 Posted February 3, 2002 This trailer just arrived in the junkyard. The roof vents leak, so the interior got trashed. But, it has a heavy “I” beam frame (not stamped steel), and full metal framing (not wood). I figure once it’s gutted, I can cut out the back, reinforce and gusset, and install a loading ramp. If this project ever gets completed, I will be able to get my garage back. Also, it will be convenient to take all my tractors and many attachments to a job site rather than transporting one or two at a time. Just sitting here playing around. What do you think of the proposed paint scheme ? http://home.att.net/~herb.niewender/rambler-seq.jpg
StinKy 0 Posted February 4, 2002 I've been "dealing" for a 48' commercial truck trailer with roll-up rear door. I figure it would be great storage especially in light of the fact the township cant tax me for it if I leave the wheels on it, I thought I'd dig a pit to set the rear duals down in which in turn would lower the body enough so I could use a short ramp for entry. I have enough wooded area behind my house to conceal it (wife insists) and thought some sort of "camo" paint job would be the finishing touch for my Stealth-Storage project. Havent got the trailer yet but that's my plan if I do. Dick
StinKy 0 Posted February 4, 2002 Herb, When I see your name on the message I know I'm in for a treat, and this is no exception. The idea is incredible, I would love to see some pictures of the project when you get started on it. As for the paint scheme, I had to pick myself up off the floor I was laughing so hard. I love to read your posts, Thanks, Gene
MPH 12 Posted February 4, 2002 Dick, if you leave the trailer sitting up at the proper ht and backfill a ramp up to it, you can leave one side of the ramp straight up by useing railroad tie or the such, then you have a pick-up ht off-loading ramp for the tractors you round up..MPH

BigSix 0 Posted February 5, 2002 Dutch: I like the project, for transport ability, storage and also as a dry, remote "service bay" for the relatives'/friends' projects I'm sure you get hooked into. I particularly like that it has "shore power" for this purpose, i.e., you can probably plug in an outside AC source? One suggestion: First I thought "generator" for field repairs, but then I thought a "DC Inverter" would be cheaper, lighter, much smaller, no noise/fumes, so you could run my favorite new tool (Dremel) off of the tow vehicle's service battery, the few times you need to do field surgery on the job. I believe www.crutchfield.com has inverters, as they appear in their paper catalogue. You could mount it in the trailer, and jump it from underhood, or dedicate a hot line off the pickup w/ a connector of some sort. (All of which assumes an inverter can push enough "microhenries" to run a Dremel--I'm assuming this is no problem?) Just curious if this makes sense to others? My Dremel was like a magic wand on the first three things I used it on (so far...lol). Peter
Dutch 4 Posted February 6, 2002 Marty, That rhymes with "Trailer Park Trash". But, I guess you knew that. It will be nice if I ever get it done. BTW - Here in the "Garden State" we call them "Mobile Home Estates".

Bufford 0 Posted February 6, 2002 The DC-AC inverter is a great idea, as I have a few of them. I found that northern hydraulics has quite a few and slightly lower prices. 400W (800 max) for $40. I have one that I plug into the truck for when driving the wife around. She keeps an electric blanket plugged in so I dont have to hear about how cold it is in the truck. She thinks it is cold unless the temp in the truck is hitting 85-90 degrees. I dont.[A href='http://www.northerntool.com/catalog/']http://www.northerntool.com/catalog/[/a]
