Chris727 2,014 Posted October 25, 2015 I just brought home a new to me 917H a week ago. However its not new the to the club. I bought this from Country (Darin Butcher). This is the tractor which received a vertical to horizontal engine swap. This is my first runnable Kohler opposed twin and it runs great. Seems like a real power pack. Has Nanco's on the rear. Will have to see how they perform.Has snow hogs up front. I might go back to turfs but am not decided. Overall its in pretty nice shape for an original tractor. It has poor-mans power steering installed and an upgraded greaseable front axle bolt. Darin was kind enough to supply me with a detailed 49 page write up detailing the installation of the MV18 engine. He also included a very nice one-point hitch he fabricated. Next projects for this machine will include a little detailing and touch ups. Will likely paint all four wheels cream again and install some small rear weights. RickS 87 Posted October 26, 2015 I ran snow hogs on my tractor for many years year round. They didn't tear up the grass and help with the sliding in the winter. I would give them a try before you swap them out. Rick.....

Chris727 2,014 Posted October 30, 2015 Thanks guys! I did a little tilling last night. Wished I had a bigger plot to work with... I don't think the tiller has been used much. Its rusty from sitting out but there was no visible wear on the tines and the little greasecaps were present.

SmilinSam 4,028 Posted October 31, 2015 What all had to be done to flip the engine from vertical to horizontal?

maxwood 596 Posted October 31, 2015 Hello, Switching from vertical to horizontal requires splitting the case installing horizontal oil pump drilling oil passages and drilling drain plug also needed is an M18 horizontal intake manifold . I have some (4 PDFs ) 83MBs instructions that were sent by a fellow member. Thanks Ken in Mi
Simplicity7013H 95 Posted October 31, 2015 So... your saying that the engine in that tractor used to be a vertical shaft engine and it was converted to a horizontal?? Might have to give that a try. Would it work vise versa with a horizontal to a vertical?
720nut 4,225 Posted November 1, 2015 Was unaware that a 917 came with a vertical shaft. are you sure?
Simplicity7013H 95 Posted November 1, 2015 I think what they are saying is that the engine used to be a vertical shaft and then was converted to horizontal shaft to fit in the tractor. Correct??

Correct?? id="quote">id="quote">Yep, used to be an MV18 from a Craftsman but was converted to a horizontal shaft M18 configuration to fit the Allis.

Chris727 2,014 Posted November 1, 2015 I searched the archives but only found references to doing it, not the actual write up. I believe Darin might have it in PDF?? He provided me with a printed copy when I bought the tractor. Its nearly 50 pages.
country 0 Posted November 6, 2015 Hey Chris, great to see it working! Was nice meeting another club member, it doesn't seem there are that many of us around the St. Louis area. Also glad I was able to pass the tractor along to another club member! I still have the write up on the engine conversion. It's really large so I had to break it up into 4 documents to be able to email it. I'll gladly share it. It would be great if there was a way to post it on the site, but I don't know how.
