B&S 18HP Just Quit Running

Recommended Posts

lampoulos

Alright gents. I have an 18HP opposed cylinder B&S engine that just quite running on my as if the key switch was simply turned off. The key switch is bypassed and key switch and the engine cranks over so I know it's not a safety switch problem. I have had mag problems with it but the one that's on it is only a month old. What else am I missing. There is no spark. Any help would be appreciated.

Literally just got done mowing pushed in the clutch, reached down to shut the mower off and the engine died before I reached the pto handle. I've confirmed that there's no spark. Earlier this year the switch in the back of the tractor went out for all the safeties, so I made a ground wire and switch from the mag to the engine mount bolt effectively bypassing everything in the chassis so after it shut down on me this time I removed the wire from the switch with no change. Tomorrow I will disassemble the shrouding from the top of the engine and remove the wire directly from the mag, but I'm not confident that's the problem.

Oh yah, and then I walked over to my 2210 (that has always been faithful) to finish the job and IT wouldn't start! Wasn't a good day.... Thanks for letting me vent.

BLT was correct as always! Simple fix. The wire to the mag shorted out on the sheet metal at the front of the engine and the top shroud. Couldn't have been easier. Thanks for listing to me vent. Had to find an excuse to start writing in the forums again anyway. Seemed as good as any.

I've had that so many times that the first thing I do is slide the ground wire in or out to see if it has notched into the sheet metal.

Good morning peeps! I’m always searching for helpful information with my AC collection. Hope to find out new information and pass on my own experience in restoration. Here are some pics of my babies. I’m still looking for front rims for the 410 so yesterday I put the 310 wheels on took it for a drive. Working pretty good but still needs some carb work. Gotta get the 310 running next. Have a great day!😁
