JeffG 0 Posted February 8, 2002 Does it sound worth tinkering with? Absolutely ... but, for the seller. He knows the tractor, as you said he was the original owner (27 years worth). I would think he'd be able to take care of anything minor (points, governor, timing, plugs, whatever ...) to assure that it was running perfect to be ready to sell. That makes me think that whatever is wrong with it may be beyond his capabilities - meaning something major like the engine or hydrostat. I'd tell him to fix it (take it to a dealer, whatever he has to do) and when he has it in good running condition, you'll consider it at that time. Otherwise, you're buying a parts tractor (for all you know). Just my two cents worth ... so value accordingly. Jeff
DaveL 0 Posted February 8, 2002 Agree with Jeff. Especially if you are still dickering price, as all your buying leverage disappears once YOU do the work to put it in good order. Have been there, paying way too much for something not in running shape the way it should have been--but would have been more upset if I had spent the time to fix it and then the owner tried to up the price cause then it was in "good shape". Sounds like an honest owner, but firm up the price BEFORE, with the condition that if the machine turns out to need a major repair then the purchase is voided. Just my two cents worth.
