SimpleMan 8 Posted February 8, 2002 Hello to all. I wasn't sure if I should put this in the "for sale" section since it isn't for sale yet...so here goes. I've been thinking of changing the steering on my 1998 Sovereign to power steering. If I do this I would be interested in selling the entire steering assembly from my tractor. This would include everything from the steering wheel up to and including the drag link, and all parts inbetween. If anyone would be interested in this...please let me know, with an indication of what you would consider a fair price for something like this. Note, that all parts are in excellent shape...only 4 years. old! If I go through with my plans, more details would follow as to shipping arrangements, etc.. This is just to "test the market". Roy 0 Posted February 8, 2002 Do not change to power steering unless you like "lag" when making quick turns!! My 1999 Sovereign steering feels like it is locking up on quick turns due to hydraulic lag. Roy
SimpleMan 8 Posted February 9, 2002 Dutch...yes, it is the system with the dedicated steeering box. I believe ( and correct me if I'm wrong) but the other system is no longer available. Gord
SimpleMan 8 Posted February 9, 2002 Thanks Roy...I will seriously consider your advise. Like I stated, I have'nt made up my mind yet. My biggest concern is that if in future I decide to do the same thing I won't be able to due to lack of parts. ( I hope I'm wrong), but since this particular model of tractor is no longer being made..how long do they keep parts around for? Gord PS Does anyone else have input as to the pros/cons of powersteering vs manual? Has anyone made the conversion? What was your result? Thanks all.
Dutch 4 Posted February 9, 2002 Gord, Are you thinking of installing a factory kit? If so, according to my parts manual, most of the original steering components are retained. Only the drag link is replaced, everything else is added. I can't comment on the PS, but my 1996 Sovereign steers just fine without it (when moving I can turn the wheel with one finger). Do you have a front mounted attachment? Have you checked for steering problems? Sounds like you and Roy may be able to work out some sort of swap.
SimpleMan 8 Posted February 9, 2002 Thanks Dutch. My steering system works fine. Just as a clarification on my part, I talked to the major parts distributor in our (Yetman's in Winnipeg) area, and also checked in my parts manual. If I decide to go through with this the only thing that I would be retaining of my steering system would be the tie rod, front axle and spindle assemblies. Basically, everything else gets replaced by kit #1692856, which is not listed in the parts manual. The only reason I might do this is because I want to. Call it strange...but. Dutch 4 Posted February 9, 2002 The kit in my manual is #1692098. It appears to be an "old fashion" design with in-line valve. The #1692859 kit may be a different design to eliminate the "lag" problem. Is the valving in a steering box? Won't call your reason "strange". I do plenty of things simply because I "want to." Safer than climbing mountains because "they're there."
