Converting lawn sweeper to direct drive

is it possible to convert lawn sweeper drive for the brushes all on one drive vs running off a pinion(#17)& the inner plastic teeth on the plastic wheels that wear out?

On every one I've ever played with the brush turns opposite direction as the wheels, so I don't think direct drive would work, at least not well....
