Double Transmission Rebuild (Finished w/new pics)

I have been rebuilding 2 variable transmissions over the past few weeks. Here are some pictures.

Getting the axle apart on the rusted up 3210 took some effort.Doing two at the same time made the job a little easier.

I found a broken brake shaft and key inside the 3210, which made gear removal a bit of a challenge.

I also found a chewed up reverse gear on the input pulley shaft.

Here are the gear shafts going back in. Removing and installing the pulley shaft and the 1st intermediary shaft is a bit of a maneuver with the shift forks.Having done this once before, I now more understand how to do this smoothly and with less effort.

Here are some sweet parts I got from Dan AKA Rokon. dOd He really hooked me up with great parts, a great price, as well as super fast shipping. He is a class act. This club is a great resource to find the parts when they come up NLA.I bought all other available seals and keys from Jack's Small Engine.

Here are the chewed keys from the 3rd intermediary shaft.

Here is another shot of the chewed tooth on the reverse gear that I replaced through Rokon. Someone was not nice to this 3210 transmission. They probably did not have the variable adjusted properly, and was a grinder.

Here is the busted brake shaft key way and key. It goes to show you something snapped this. I have never used this transmission so it happened prior to coming into my ownership on the 3210.

All I have left to do is close up the cases with new gaskets and seals, and then give them each a spray paint.

I am hoping to get that done today.

Nice work. It's amazing how some people will accept the grinding of gears, or how careless they are and grind gears because the are impatient.

Thanks for the feedback.

I did not get them closed up today, other projects took priority.

I am on the hunt for those 2 small chewed up half moon keys on the 3rd intermediary shaft.

I believe I got them a time before at a local hardware store.

Today I bought an assorted pack of moon keys from TSC. They had one that is a surface match, but they were too thin by a 1/32 to 1/16, enough to make them sloppy.

At least You did not have to deal with the Bentonite mess of the Tecumseh transaxles!

The shifting key looks very similar.

id="quote">Yes Wayne, I'm glad it was not as bad as those transaxles.It should shift like a dandy after I get it back together with the replacement gear and keys.The 3210 would not roll before while in neutral. I have not yet inspected the differential, but I found enough broken parts inside the transmission to explain it I would guess.

I see you did also get all the "home improvement" items taken care of that were stored in your garage. You were one busy guy!

Thank you Tony and Mark, I really appreciate the positive encouragement.

It feels real good to have these done. Another nice thing is that the transmissions no longer leak oil and grease on my garage floor.

The new seals and gaskets make a world of difference.
