Painting transmissions?

When painting a transmission,is it routine to paint the axle tube also?

My axle tubes have been prone to rusting.

Is there any special prep that needs to be done on these transmissions?

Lots and Lots of Degreasing. I wouldn't think it to be a problem painting axle shafts, as long as the contact areas with seals and bearings are taped off or protected in some other way.

I will tape and protect seal areas for sure.

Any other ways to just paint the transmission,not the axle tubes, and yet keep them from rusting up?

What was original, were the tubes painted?

The axle tubes were painted from the factory.

I paint them. Have had lots of practice after using emery cloth to knock paint and burrs off axel tube when replacing axel seals (couple more due this winter).
