jsarro 5 Posted November 18, 2015 When painting a transmission,is it routine to paint the axle tube also? My axle tubes have been prone to rusting. Is there any special prep that needs to be done on these transmissions? Thanks
Mike_H 92 Posted November 18, 2015 Lots and Lots of Degreasing. I wouldn't think it to be a problem painting axle shafts, as long as the contact areas with seals and bearings are taped off or protected in some other way.
jsarro 5 Posted November 18, 2015 Thanks Mike, I will tape and protect seal areas for sure. Any other ways to just paint the transmission, not the axle tubes, and yet keep them from rusting up? What was original, were the tubes painted? Thanks
Chris727 2,024 Posted November 19, 2015 The axle tubes were painted from the factory.
gwiseman 1,679 Posted November 19, 2015 I paint them. Have had lots of practice after using emery cloth to knock paint and burrs off axel tube when replacing axel seals (couple more due this winter).
