pwrstrokin
I have a KT-17 series II in some need of work. The general sensus says not to rebuild the KT. I need some other options with little to no retrofit. Will the Command series (ch-18) V twin bolt in the 7117? I know the magnum 18 will bolt in. I want an engine that will last in this machine. Thanks for the input. Jim
Dutch
If I were going to repower a 7100 series, I would definately talk to Al Eden about one of his kits.
BillC
I believe a Kohler Command OHV series engines will fit right in. On the newer Sovereign's, powered with the Kohler Triad OHC engines, the engine is mounted to an adapter plate which raises the engine up off the frame. The dimension from the centerline of crankshaft to the bottom of the oil pan is different between the Triad (1.5 quart oil capacity) and the Command (2 quart capacity - deeper pan). According to Kohler, the Triad OHC engine does not require as much oil capacity because of better cooling of the cylinders, because the camshafts are mounted above the head rather than in the valley like the Command, and the cylinder head is cast as part of the block, eliminating the insulating characteristics of a head gasket. The only question I still have is: If the Triad OHC enigne is considered an industrial engine by Kohler, why do I see many Kohler Command OHV engines on portable welding and generator sets, which run wide open throttle, but not one Triad OHC?" JohnN
I installed a K341 in my 7117 and it works like a charm. You do have to replace the driveshaft from a single cylinder model i.e. 7116, 916... $30 dollars used from Sandy Lake, $62 dollars new. Very easy swap, took the better part of 2 hours. Best of luck, John PS. from what I here, the series ii is a good engine. It was the series i that I heard had problems with oil circulation. PatRarick
Contact Al Eden. He has kits to convert the 7117 to a Kohler V-twin. I believe the price is about $1900, including the engine. Not bad, when you consider that the discount price for an 18 horse Magnum twin is about $1400. Pat
Kent
Since Al Eden's computer is temporarily down, getting "repowered" I thought I'd link in what I've been helping him with.... His kits are COMPLETE down to the last nut and bolt... check them out. Here's one in a 919....[A href='http://repowereng.com/repowereng/'][img src='http://repowereng.com/repowereng/images/allis919_.Install_left.JPG'][/a]
Guest
In my humble opinion, if you are trying to save money, rebuilding the kt17 II's is very doable if you do the work yourself, and the block and cylinders are in okay shape.......we have rebuilt several(over dozen) and have had only one failure.... pricing is as follows: machining two cylinders $100 machining crank 75 gasket set 100 2 connecting rods 100 2 pistons and rings(oversize) 180 miscellaneous 100 ============================= ===== estimated subtotal $650..... not bad for a repower that will run as smooth as silk.....remember this needs to be a serie II just my thoughts
