Excluding vandalism, gas can get in oil due to an overflowing carb or a ruptured fuel pump diaphram. Extended use with diluted oil can severely damage an engine. Whenever I check oil (before every use) I wipe the dipstick with my fingers to feel the viscosity.

Gas in the crankcase can be death for an engine. Find the cause and correct.

Most gas in oil comes from a bad fuel pump diaphram as meantioned before. A cheap fix compared to an engine rebuild.

Joel, One other thing that may dump raw gas into your oil. Not knowing the amount of gas or tractor history of starting, etc. Raw gas could have been dumped into the carburetor to get it started a few times and the excess gas drained into your oil through the intake. I would suggest you change the oil and filter and replace with new oil. Run a while and keep checking the oil smell and viscosity. You may save yourself tearing down the fuel pump. You should start with a good grade of oil with your just bought tractor anyway. If you find out you still get gas into your oil then all you lost was a filter and some oil. To me it would be worth a try. Think about it and good luck. John

HAd a fuel pump diaphram break on the JD 444C loader at work a few years ago. The following day when I checked the oil I found we had about 2-3 gallons of diesel pumped into the crankcase. It apparrently did not hurt the engine(had it been a gas engine it probably would have been all she wrote), but it makes a point for checking the oil on a daily routine.....

When my son was first getting into driving he was complaining my old dodge was "chugging and wouldn't hardly run. I was working outta town 60 miles working 6 12's driving the van he was used to, everything automatic with efi. Checked the pickup oil and found it over full by about 2 qts, smelled like gas so got a new pump assuming that was the problem, changed oil and told him to watch it close and in a couple days he said it more oil in than before. It was up about half a qt. Had him leave it home the next day and went for a ride with h im driving after it he started it cold to see why it chugged for him but wouldn't do it for me, figured out he was not openning the manual choke all the way thus was running Way rich and filling the oil with excess gas. Not sure how many mile that took off the ole 318 but she's still going today..Might try changing the oil and see how it runs, and make sure the carb is set right..MPH
