Dutch 4 Posted February 10, 2002 I’ll ask the bottom line question first. Can old implements be used with modern engines? The old cast iron engines that used ball or cone bearings as crankshaft mains could withstand side loads (pulleys on front PTOs with horizontal engines / mower deck pulleys on vertical shaft). Even if manufactured with ball or cone bearings, will modern aluminum engines withstand those side loads?
StinKy 0 Posted February 10, 2002 HELLO :} Herb "Dutch" I don't see why not. opps I skipped a few lines here. Any of these engines do have tolerate side forces from the pullies that are installed on them for running the mower deck ect. Infact from what I have seen some of these newer engines have longer shafts and multible pullies mounted on them that in some cases seem to have more stress on them then the older horizonal ones. I have seen the older cast iron engines bearings wear out just like the newer alum. ones do. Really I feel it depends on the type of bearings used in any of the engines old or new regardless of cast or alum. design. >>-happyjack<-<<
