Replace Kohler Triad

I have a Y2K Sovereign with a Triad that has 300+ hours. Has anyone had experience with Repower Specialists kits? Following is what is suggested: Vanguard 23HP. The kit would include:

• New engine with 3-year manufacturer's warranty

• Electrical harness

• Exhaust

• Driveline adaptors

• Remote oil filter assembly

• Note: The hood will/may need to be raised or trimmed for clearance

• Unlimited technical support

• Kit guarantee

• Free shipping

Why would the hood need to be raised? I have a 1992/1993 17GTH-L with a Vanguard in it. I didn't bolt it in there, but there are not hood clearance problems. Mine is an 18hp, so maybe the 23hp is a different dimension.

I have not repowered my Sovereign yet, but I have purchased all the parts so I am ready when the time comes. You can use a Kohler Command and have (2) choices: 1) 19HP PA-62513, CH620-3110, -3126, $1350.67 or 2) 20.5HP PA-64512, CH640-3110, -3126, $1717.09. I purchased my Command from Pats Small Engine Plus. The Command throttle cable is shorter than the Triad. You can use the existing and shorten or purchase the Command cable, Simplicity P/N 1666268SM, $23. You will have to purchase the Command muffler, Simplicity P/N 1686655SM, $425 (OUCH!). You will need (2) drive shaft spacers, Simplicity P/N 1656397SM, $22.50 & (2) grade 5 hex head cap screws 3/8-16 NC x 2-1/4 long. You will also need to get a 5-wire mated connector, Kohler P/N 2515506-S and 1/4" flat male spade terminals, Kohler P/N 5245201-S. The Command wiring harness is opposite of the Triad. The connector and male terminals are to alter tractor's wiring harness. You will also need a 3/8" NPT x 1" long pipe nipple, a 3/8" NPT pipe coupling and a shut off valve, Simplicity P/N 1708405SM, $23.10 for the oil drain.

I found a lightly used but weathered looking Command for my repower. I gave $125 for the engine. I had to buy the correct blower cover, "chopper screen," and rocker cover with oil fill, and a vacuum type fuel pump as it was not equipped with these. Those parts were around $175 I believe. I reused the existing cables and driveshaft adapter. I had to buy the muffler but (at the time was around $220) but called around and found one a dealer wanted to get rid of and gave around $175 shipped. This was after unsuccessfully attempting to mod the original triad muffler to work on the command to a cost of around $50. I will admit I got lucky on some of these items. I am happy very happy with the conversion. Its like a new tractor. Plenty of power with just the 18hp engine. As far as the vanguards go, we installed an 18hp Vanguard kit from SEW into a JD 317 at work. The engine is plenty powerful and the customer is very satisfied.

I have driven the 18hp vanguard repower on 2 different sovereigns, and a command repower that I did. I would either do the command in an 18hp and up, or if you go briggs, a little larger. For some reason I remember the fan blowing the wrong way on a briggs. I know I loved my 20hp command!

The hood in the later models actually sat a bit lower in front, one of the few changes in the overall design of the tractor. That might have something to do with it?

Here is a pic of the difference in hood height from the 92/93 17GTH-L to my 97 18hp Sov. The difference is small enough that it wouldn't matter with the 354445 in my tractor. But again, the 23hp may be taller/wider due to more cubic inches.

I too have a very new Sovereign that had the Triad engine. I decided to save a few bucks for a while and in early 2012 I got the Command repower kit from Al Eden. Am really happy I did it because I now have a tractor that hopefully will last for years and years. I even watched ebay after and got the proper drive shaft and rubber coupler between the engine and BGB as well. I sure am glad I did this when it was still available from Al. I sure wouldn't be afraid of a 18 hp Command. I really can't see where I would need any more power than it has.

Hello, I should mention that the plate under the triad is needed to raise the Briggs to the proper height, but is not needed for the command engine. Do not throw that plate away ,You can sell it if you don't use it!

Thanks Ken in Mi

I would be cautious putting more than 20HP thru the BGB. I am not sure what HP the BGB is designed for. The attachment which would cause the worst loading, which is shock, is the tiller. The mower would cause the least with the snow thrower being second.
