PhanDad 3,616 Posted January 24, 2016 I'm no expert, but it sounds like a differential key. I believe they can fall out if the axle locking ring comes loose allowing the axle to move sideways. Search for differential or axle tube repair to see what you're in for.
Horvik 31 Posted January 25, 2016 Hello; Sounds like...a tore up keyway. Either the one locking the Differential to the axle tube, or inside the diff itself. Better than having to tear the rear end off and replace the axle tube assembly. Did that before and it's a lot of work. But it IS worth repair! All the best
Brettw 1,130 Posted January 25, 2016 The geared collar that inserts into the differential may not be meshed. This can happen if the collar with the set screws slips.
