engine swap

Hi, I have a 7018 that is missing the engine. I bought it that way.

I have the chance to buy a Kohler 18hp twin cylinder opposed engine.

Has anybody install 1 of these in a 70 series tractor.

Looks like a lot of cutting and I'm worried about weakening the frame

I'm thinking about putting a 16 hp single cylinder in it as it will drop right in.

Any suggestions? thank you

Sounds like a Kohler Magnum 18 (same as a KT17-19 dimensionally and nearly identical physically). That engien was installed from the factory in the 7100 series, and I beleive should bolt right into the 7000 with alterations of the frame sides. The 7100 series with those engines had the frame sides cut down to accomodate the cylinders and tins. It shouldn't weaken the frame to any great extent. You may also have to cut a bit for oil filter clearance. The electronics are different if it is a Magnum, so the ignition switch / system would have to be changed.

I am sure it would work, however, the 7000 sereis frames were a bit different than the 7100 series. Someone else may be able to offer some more insight.

I think you might end up running out of room in front for the muffler. IIRC, 71xx tractors and later are a couple inches longer in front of the axle. That being said, I don't think you should let that stop you.

If you're worried about the frame, cut your clearance, then weld in some more steel to thicken the frame rail. Mufflers can be almost anything. You might give Small engine warehouse a call. They might have a muffler solution for you. I know they sell a repower kit for 70xx tractors that is a Briggs Vanguard V-Twin.

Probably the easiest thing to do would be find a 16hp Kohler single and swap it in place of the K361 18hp single. Least amount of change.

Next easiest Briggs 16hp single. Have to change ignition switch, pretty sure.

With the M18 twin frame needs cut, ignition needs changed up, muffler clearance as noted above will probably be an issue.

or find someone with original engine and go that way.

I have the Allis version of your tractor a 718H. Ended up swapping a Briggs into it. Bought a wiring harness with switch off e-bay.

The hood won't work either without major mods. I have looked at this in the past and I felt it was too much work.

Now a Kohler command (CH18) V-twin can drop into the 7000 series without a lot of frame work and no hood mods. With the biggest issue being exhaust.
