First Firing! 196? Wonderboy 700

I just pulled the engine out of my 1961 700 and I have the same "fine whine" as you. It must be the nature of the beast (I hope). Does anyone else have that whine?. On to your gas tank... I have seen a small screen filter at the bottom of tanks before you may want to check there. I would pull the tank, pull the petcock and blow some cleaner or compressed air through the ports and then see if you have flow. Also check to make sure that there is no rust in the tank. Good luck John H

The transmission on my 725 does whine a little while pushing by hand. I use Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic gear lube in both the bevel gear box and transmission. Most industrial gearbox manufacturers are using synthetic lubrication to increase gear life. To clean your sediment bowl, turn the petcock in to shut of the flow of gas, loosen the screw beneath the glass bowl to remove, clean bowl and replace. I would also recommend adding a fuel filter between the sediment bowl and the carb for added protection.

Hello, when I owned my 700 it would make a wine, I think it is just for things being worn in, and when the beast of a briggs motor is running you can never hear the wining out out the tranny then anyways,-BradW http://www.simpletractors.com/images/do_it/BW_Simp4.jpg

Well, finally got around to dropping a battery into my ("new")Wonderboy 700, and after a prime down the carb throat it fired and ran strongly for about 3 seconds. No knocks, no smoke and, quite honestly, I was pleased that this project already had a working spark, so I don't have to "start at the bottom" this time! My question: I see no fuel is filling the glass bowl of the (watertrap/sediment) bowl no matter which way I turn the little brass petcock, full open or full closed. Has anybody had to "degunk" one of these and might be able to point me in the right direction? Also, when I push the tractor around, there is much "fine whine" from the rearend, a rather light whining sound. I think the transaxle leaks, as bottom is wet, and no fluid in the fill port. I will add generic 80-90W hypoid, right? Incidentally, it's been repowered w/ a bronze-colored 8hp. B&S, of what appears to be a similar, or possibly the correct vintage. I will decode the #'s shortly. So it's a Wonderboy "800," right? Thanks again. I'm excited to "get tractorin'"! Peter

More problems! But first, I'd like to thank JohnH, BillC and BradW for their help--this is an update on my "First Firing" post of last night. It seems the gas is either flowing thru the fuel petcock w/o filling the glass bowl, or I just can't see it, b/c the eng. is getting gas. However, the petcock will NOT shut off the flow...has anyone got an idea why this might be? The threads are not stripped on the petcock plug/shaft. I can't work on the carb until I can shut the gas off.... BTW--Brad--love the stack! I'm going to make a new post for my next problem...Kent, is there a protocol for this situation, i.e., you've got new questions relating to an earlier post, but don't want them to be "missed," is it appropriate to start a new posting? Thanks, Peter

Peter, the two things that come to mind are: 1. The screen is plugged up and gas is staying on top of it. 2. The needle is not coming out all of the way, it just let's it go through the fuel line, get some carb cleaner, dissassemble the strainer assembly and soak over night, try blowing the pieces out and soak for another hour and clean with fresh gas and dry, re-assemble and try it again, this was a problem on my of my old Case farm tractors that used the same basic strainer, and for the stack, try the link below for the DIY section where Kent was nice enough to add my article on the conversion, good luck,-BradW[A href='http://www.simpletractors.com/do_it/stack_muffler.htm']http://www.simpletractors.com/do_it/stack_muffler.htm[/a]
