Simplicity7013H 95 Posted May 11, 2016 Hello, I have a 16hp cast iron briggs that I'm trying to get going. I got it all reassembled, carb set and gas going but, the starter isn't powerful enough to spin the motor all the way thru the compression stroke. Is it just the SG or is it something else? Are these motors supposed to have a lot of compression? My 7016H is the same way but it actually starts. Lol
Ronald Hribar 105 Posted May 11, 2016 I have found if belt is too tight it is harder to turn over
fishnwiz 3,290 Posted May 11, 2016 Sometimes you have to roll the motor back from the compression stroke to kind of get a running start at the SG spin.
1978Simplicity7016H 39 Posted May 12, 2016 Can you spin it over by hand through the compression stroke? If it is almost impossible to turn over yet easy when the spark plug is out, maybe the Easy-Start incline on the cam is wore off. Good that it has compression, but hopefully the compression release is working and just the belt like Ronald said.
PhanDad 3,616 Posted May 12, 2016 I think your S/G is "tired"; maybe brushes or other issue causing the loss of torque. Swap the S/G's and that should tell whether it's the engine or S/G issue.
goatfarmer 817 Posted May 12, 2016 The obvious question, the battery up to snuff?
Kenh 37 Posted May 13, 2016 The valve clearance has to be within spec for the compression release to work properly. I believe if the gap is too wide the CR ceases to function. Ken
Simplicity7013H 95 Posted May 14, 2016 Sorry guys, I've been away on a class trip for the past few days so I haven't been able to do any further investigation into the matter. I'll let you guys know tomorrow how it goes.
