Gonna rebuilt a 48 inch deck to start mowing with and wanted to know what the FINAL ANSWER is. Do I drill housing and install grease fittings or don't the spindle bearings need grease?

They do not need grease

The grease keeps the water out that will rust your bearings

Drill tap and grease

If you wash regularly with water or mow submerged vegetation, grease. I have never bothered, and have seen no ill effect. Some folks prefer the precautionary measure. Mother Simplicity knows best.

Lubrication is still the most cost effectiive means of preventitive maintenance that I'm aware of (even if it's only used as a moisture barrier).

The deck I am running already has grease zerks on each spindle so yes grease. If the 48" you are working on has factory lubed and sealed bearings those would not require a fitting.
