Simplicity7013H 95 Posted June 3, 2016 Hello All, I have been working on my Squire 9 and did a pulley swap on the transmission so that it would go faster (11mph) but it eats up the belts. I went from stock 6.5" pulley to a 2.5" pulley and I can't figure out why the bottom of the belt is wearing down. The only rubbing points are a belt guard to keep the belt from rubbing on itself and another one that stops the belt when you hit the clutch. They are both smooth and rounded steel so there is no sharp surfaces to wear the belt. I know it's not stock so there is bound to be issues but I can't find a cause. Let me know what you guys think! Thanks, Elliott
PhanDad 3,617 Posted June 3, 2016 Maybe the "V" groove is too wide and the belt is bottoming out in the 2.5" pulley. V belts are supposed to run on sides with the bottom not touching the pulley.
MikeES 458 Posted June 3, 2016 A friend had the same problem with a 2110, he sped up for tractor parades. I think that the driven pulley was too small and caused excess heat. (Too tight a bend for that size belt). He changed to a larger drive pulley and a larger driven pulley, and since had no problems.
Talntedmrgreen 1,978 Posted June 4, 2016 I share Mike's thoughts. I'm betting that belt is just bending too much and the safer bet is to put a larger Drive pulley on versus the smaller driven pulley. That will also put a longer belt on the system which will inherently cool itself better.
Simplicity7013H 95 Posted June 5, 2016 Thanks guys I never thought about that. I'll try and put a larger drive pulley on it and see if I can't exchange the driven pulley for a larger one. I really appreciate your help!
