The T816 has vari-shift, or vari-drive. It is the same as the Simplicity 6216. The belts need to be good for the variable speed to work correctly, and it needs to be set up right too. If you download the book it will explain it all. I have a T816 and love it, I use mine mostly with a 42 inch snowblower in the winter. The vari-drive is great with the blower. The simplicity 6216 is either mfg. number 1690688 or 1690756, according to the books I have. The two drive belts are: front, from engine to vari-drive 1669393,which is 5/8 X 53 inches, and back, from vari-drive to transmission 1669394, which is 5/8 X 50 inches. I have used other belts but the simplicity ones will work and last better. One is a cog belt, the other standard, not sure which is which off hand, but I think the back belt that goes to the tranny is the cog belt. The variator pulley needs to have the center part sliding very freely back and forth. I use powdered graphite, it works good, the book will give instructions on proper lube and cleaning.

I would start with Hood #'s. For me, I expect a little back and forth to the store with belts until I learn my machine. They all come out of the factory the same, but over the decades they develop a "personality" that I may need to adjust to. Just my $.02, Dave

The belt number on your hood would be a 5/8 X 54 inch belt. Not sure why it would have a different number and length. I have an Allis T816 and I replaced both belts with the numbers from the simplicity 6216 book and it works fine. I would try the one on the hood first and go to the longer one if needed. My tractor does not have the numbers on the hood like yours does, maybe they changed something. I do know that the pulley on the engine, although the same size, is built differently for the allis than the simplicity. I have the book for the 6216 simplicity in pdf, so if you need it send me your email and I can send it to you. Also, I let mine idle for a minute before shutting down and it doesn't backfire.

I find the best are right from Simplicity, kind of pricy but last a long time. If I don't buy original, I usually use the green industrial belts found at places like Fleet Farm, Theisens, etc. Cheaper but don't last as long. For the vari-drive, I would recommend finding oem belts. If your dealer can't get them, they can be found on ebay usually, or places like JacksSmallEngines.

That idler should be leaning towards the clutch pedal side of the tractor some. The back of the belt is riding on it and it makes a pretty drastic twist from the engine to the vari drive pulley in a short distance, so the belt kind of rides a bit funny in it.

You will need to do the complete adjustment routine on it. Also, check the spring tension that pulls the clutch back, it is adjustable in case you need more pull. Also, there are belt stops on the engine pulley that should be set correctly. If you do all this it should shift smoothly.

Check the safety switches, might be a problem there. I don't remember exactly how they are set up on the T816 but if moving the shifter allows it to start I would guess this is the likely problem.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
