Slow cranking 16 hp Briggs

Got a gilson cast iron started last week but slow so charged battery still the same positive cable got warm and saw a little smoke from solenoid tried (20) times some time will spin once but mostly slow or not at all??

Well, it's pretty much the usual suspects. If cable gets warm it's too small or has a bad connection. If smoke at the solenoid then obviously that's not right either. Probably should try a new solenoid.

Cables are tight now mower came with bigger battery 520 amps took off the starter not spinning smooth put some pb blaster. spins better going to let it sit a day or two. Looking for another starter thanks

Sounds like starter to me. I've opened starters up and cleaned all the debris out...more of an experiment than a repair. In my experience that perks them right back up but it is certainly not a long term fix.

Yiu would be best to clean the terminals where the smoking started. The smoking is also an indication that you have corroded connections or solder bloom which insulates the terminals and causing them to heat up when you pass a lot of amperage thru them.

Also, for DG try this.

Will save you a trip to repair shop.;)

I would start cleaning all connection involved, grounds, hot wires, switch terminals, etc, before I went to expense of anything at all, or replacing anything, and I have spare parts laying around to use

If you hotwire power down to the starter does it crank nice or still slow. If it is still slow it is the starter. If it is fast it's somewhere in the middle.

Still slow took starter apart spider web rust broke a bolt will try to clean up and grease the bearing. check out zippo on YouTube

Starter is shot!! bearing so rusted fill like they are notched pull busted a bolt but was a first time cleaning one I think I can find one this weekend thanks for all the help and tips :D
