DanD 9 Posted July 24, 2016 Well, it's pretty much the usual suspects. If cable gets warm it's too small or has a bad connection. If smoke at the solenoid then obviously that's not right either. Probably should try a new solenoid.
casinojim 83 Posted July 24, 2016 Cables are tight now mower came with bigger battery 520 amps took off the starter not spinning smooth put some pb blaster. spins better going to let it sit a day or two. Looking for another starter thanks
spi 418 Posted July 24, 2016 It may be that the starter is dragging. How does it smell?
rich_kildow 269 Posted July 24, 2016 Sounds like starter to me. I've opened starters up and cleaned all the debris out...more of an experiment than a repair. In my experience that perks them right back up but it is certainly not a long term fix.
BLT 718 Posted July 25, 2016 Yiu would be best to clean the terminals where the smoking started. The smoking is also an indication that you have corroded connections or solder bloom which insulates the terminals and causing them to heat up when you pass a lot of amperage thru them. Also, for DG try this. Will save you a trip to repair shop.
MrSteele 492 Posted July 25, 2016 I would start cleaning all connection involved, grounds, hot wires, switch terminals, etc, before I went to expense of anything at all, or replacing anything, and I have spare parts laying around to use
casinojim 83 Posted July 25, 2016 And this motor has just a starter not S/G
dentwizz 6 Posted July 25, 2016 If you hotwire power down to the starter does it crank nice or still slow. If it is still slow it is the starter. If it is fast it's somewhere in the middle.
