Brettw 1,134 Posted August 6, 2016 (edited) Well, I had seen it on Craig's, and was lucky to be the first to contact the seller. He was a good guy who kept his word and sold me the tractor sight unseen and held it until I could pick it up a few days later. As it is, a good friend has an older round hood Sovereign, and it was giving him grief. He asked if I happened to have any Simplicities for sale, I said, "it so happens I am picking one up this afternoon". He stopped in less than an hour after I got it home, and It went right from my trailer to his. I get to keep the blower and wheel weights, and I will get his old round hood too. This 7117 I think I would have done a full restore on, it's in really good shape and the original KT17 series one runs like a champ. Even has the Chrome wheel covers all the way around. PhanDad 3,622 Posted August 6, 2016 Great find from an honest seller. And he even threw in a beer for you.
goatfarmer 817 Posted August 6, 2016 Beer? Someone mention beer? Nice ride, Brett.
Brettw 1,134 Posted August 6, 2016 Yes, the seller said he was selling because it was smoking too much. Engine seemed strong and ran well, so I figured it was still worth it. Turns out it has a leak at the main seal and it was getting on the exhaust manifold. Probably a new breath and main seal and good to go. And I did leave a beer for him! I had to jump in the shower and he was on his way, so I told him a cold one was on the trailer.
MikeES 458 Posted August 7, 2016 If you didn't have him check the breather anyway, it could be why the seal blew out>
Brettw 1,134 Posted August 8, 2016 SO, upon further inspection after giving it a good bath, someone had taken the time to bolt some small aluminum tabs onto the front of the engine in the existing unused tapped holes, to hold in the old seal, which was spinning in the closing plate. Gee, I wonder why we had oil issues? Why go through all of that, making little brackets etc. instead of just properly replacing the seal? Anyway, I had a new seal here and he popped it in last night. After the permatex sets he'll check it out, but it sounds like it should be good to go.
