testing a starter/generator

Recommended Posts

BLT

Assuming that you have clean connections and you own a VOM, set the meter to DC and then stick the appropriate probes in the battery posts and observe the steady state voltage. Now start the engine, there will be a voltage drop and when the engine starts, increase the RPM and observe the meter. If you voltages increases past your stedy atate point , for an example from 10 to 12.5+ volts, your generator is doing its thing. The voltage can top off maybe around 13.5 to 14 volts.

If you take it off the tractor, ground the body, then take the positive clip of jumper cables and touch the "a" terminal and let it get up to speed, then put the positive clip onto the "f" terminal and if it acts like an electric brake and makes the starter slow down quickly, its is good. Look on ZippoVargas youtube channel he has a video on there explaining the same thing I just said. http://www.youtube.com/zippovarga/
