Nice pictures Marty. Kent where in Utah did you live? My mom has relatives out there all over the state. Every few years we go to Johns valley about 20 miles east of Bryce canyon. A friend of mine raises malamutes (since 1972) and shows them. He has a brother that lives out in Utah that raises malamutes also. John H

MPH, glad to see your pictures again! I for one enjoy seeing your corner of Seward's Icebox. Is your storage trailer a 45'? I decided I'm gonna use half of mine for storage and half for work area. Dick

John, I lived in Layton, Utah, for 7 years. It's North of Salt Lake City and South of Ogden... I enjoyed my time in Utah more than any other locale since I left Tennessee almost 30 years ago... Malamutes are my favorite breed of large dogs. They're very smart, "gentle giants" that are beautiful to look at... I call them a "giant, economy-sized Husky" since most people don't know the difference. I had a breeding pair, the male was caramel and white, at 115lbs, and the female was the more common wolf gray and white at 95 lbs. You could get some truly beautiful and unique looking pups from this combination. Kent

Don't know much about Malamutes, Kent, but have to agree. They are a great dog. Never met one I didn't like. A big huggable puppy, they are. I've got a customer with one right now. She's a real sweetheart! (the malamute, that is!) Nice looking smokehouse setup, Marty! I'm lucky if I can catch 3 20" Walleyes at my place up-north in a day. They'd get consumed B4 the coals started smok'n though. Paul

Paul, so far I'm still allowed to dipnet my salmon needs, expect that to go away in the near future. Was pretty proud of my kid building that smoker cuz I could never get him interested in building anything while in hischool, gave him guid help and all but the window screen was yard polution, he did all the cutting and nailin..Have to agree with all that malamutes are fine dogs, I'd probably have a few if I could find a strain with an on/off switch, recon I had enough of being tied down to animal care as a farmboy. Dick, my trailers only a 40 footer, not sure how much help a 45 would be but this one is way to short..MPH

Dont know how this thread evolved to dogs but I'd like to introduce you to Teddy, my male Doberman. I have a female too. At any rate he would freeze stiff before he pulled a sled 2 feet!! The ONLY threat he would pose to visitors is he might lick them to death. Dobes are so maligned as a breed I try to defend them whenever I can. If I ever get another Doby it will come from one of the rescue associations. BTW they're a great indoor dog, tight coated and shed very little. Great look'in critters guys. Ok, I'll show my boys too. Tioga is top dog at 3yrs and 95# and Gunnie at 6yrs and 65#. Both are rescue labs from Lab Education And Rescue Network (L.E.A.R.N.) of WI/IL. Hope to have both out in the field next year. Great thing about Labs is they're goofy enough that most often you can feel more intelligent than them. BTW, protect your pets with Invisible Fence Brand pet containment systems. My wife Deb is PR rep for Invisible Fence Co. of Madison. Paul PS: MPH, In a few years I'll have a 1980 Liberty 14x52 for you if you want to haul it from Phillips, WI. http://www.epho.com/pkjorlie/DaBoys.jpg

Gang, They say life begins at 40. That's not really true. Life begins after the kids leave home and all the pets die. Roy

MPH, By George, I think you've got it... Is that your above ground cache where you keep your frozen caribou and moose meat out of the reach of wolves and other varmints? BTW, as a young teenager, my favorite books were the Jack London ones and the "Kazan, Dog of the North" series of books by Kurwood. When I lived in Utah I had a 115 lb Malamute named Kazan... wish I had a more appropriate space for a Malamute here.... ;<) Kent

If you guys have not seen the journey of natty gan, you need to. It is an old movie that has an alaskan malamute as the lead actor. It is supposed to be a wolf. Dogs are mens best friends!

That cache is a smoke house my oldest built last summer so he could take some 'real' food back to college with him. Took 17 Copper River reds to fill it up..MPH http://a8.cpimg.com/image/8E/90/8884878-69e9-028001E0-.jpg

Did you ever look at a polar bear? Man they look friendly as a pet dog but you wouldn't put out your hand without losing it! Pets are pets only when they are with you or people they are familiar with. Just like a pack of dogs. You the owner and other humans living with you are part of the pack as far as most dogs are concerned. Outside of the pack the dog will very often act differently. Let him loose for long enough and eventually some type of natural agressive nature will come out. I'm a long distance marathoner. During training I'll run 80 to 100 miles a week. With all of that mileage often I will pick different areas to run. I've had numerous incidents with dogs. These are family pets running loose. Most are agressive maybe because they see me running. What has kept me from being bitten is my agressive nature and some luck. Some runner friends haven't been so lucky. I've confronted owners about their loose dogs coming after me and every single one expressed surprise that Muffy would attack! I still like dogs in a home environment but they do stink up the house, shed and make a mess of things. There are exceptions but most people don't see their pet's faults... As a kid I grew up with Dobermans. I've had mutts, Weimeraner, Golden Retriever, Miniature Schnauzer cats and horses. I prefer my dogs and cats outside and let them in to pet and when it's too cold outside...The miniature Schnauzer was the most ferocious dog of all. If he were 100 lbs like my Weimeraner there wouldn't be many dogs that could take him on..He acted fine with the family but hated EVERYONE ELSE...Woody Yeah JohnH that's one big DOG..

Don't want to be a party pooper, but not every club member loves dogs. I 'bout got my left hand ripped off by a "loveable" german shepard as a kid and have a nice scar at the corner of my right eye from a St Bernard. My wife got bit in the back of the leg last weekend by a "normally friendly" black lab while delivering Girl Scout cookies. I don't trust dogs. Many around here leave 'em run loose to chase others calves and fight with and impregnate the neighbors animals. For some odd reason, alot of dogs around here seem to die of lead poisoning! Sorry if I upset anyone. Just never understood such a love affair.

One more thing - it really irks me when I run over a big pile of doggie doo while giving my yard a Simplicity manicure. Especially when it gets all over my tractor and stinks up the garage! Down with dogs! Stick with useful animals. You can ride or work with horses, and eat cattle and hogs, hell, even cats catch mice, chimpmunks and snakes. What the heck is a dog good for? Home protection? I think not. That's what firearms and security systems are for and you don't need to feed and clean up after them. Bah Humbug! Brent

Brent, I can share a lot of your feeling cuz dogs have rights over people in Alaska. I've lost hundreds of meat chickens to dogs and about 3 or 4 to the wild animals of Alaska. the wild animals ate what they killed, the dogs just killed as many as they could. In thier'dogs' defence I must say they can be a useful animal. We had a collie/shepard called bobo and one called fritz when I was a kid on the farm, I had them both trained to go down the pasture that followed the creek and bring the 3 milk cows home and leave the rest. quite often the problem with dogs is the owner, though I have met dogs that are a waste of oxegen.MPH
