Hi All,

Thanks to all of you I now have my engine running good. sm01 Now I need to atttack the "can't steer" issue. The steering wheel will not budge. I  have the deck off and greased all the fittings  and raised the front end off the grond. When I wiggle the front tires I can see the the lower linkage move up to the point where the that goes thru the cast carrier under the tractor.  At this point the gears under the tractor are froze along with the steering shaft and wheel. I paid my dues but still don't have access to the PDF parts maual. With that said I'm not sure how the vertical steering shaft is held in place by the dash and on the other end of the shaft.  If someone could walk me thru what I need to do to remove or free up the shaft I would be  very greatful.

The place that the 712 would have a problem is the top of the pinion box.

Remove the battery, and you can see the steering shaft going down to the frame. With the pinion gear just below the frame.  You will see a collar that is holding the shaft to a mount, The collar rotates with the steering shaft, this collar many times will rust to the cast mount (which hold the half moon rack), penetrating oil just below the collar is the first step to freeing up the steering, I recommend that you work this before pulling it apart...spray and soak and wiggle the steering wheel back and forth.   It would also help to jack the front of the  tractor off the ground so there is not other drag on the system.

Once you free up this collar/mount connection then you will easily see all the other areas to lube.

Also there is a grease fitting under the tractor to the cast hub the hold the half moon rack that the pinion runs against.

Thanks Mike.

I have the front end up and did put Kroil on the top of the shaft.  I'm heading out to the barn to remove the battery and squirt the collar now.

Here's the upper part of the steering page parts schematic for an AC712:

The above schematic shows what Mike described.

If you get tired of waiting for your dues payment to clear, email or PM me your email addie and I'll send you electronic copies of the operator and parts manual for the AC712 tractor that I have.

Welcome to the club.

HI PhanDan,

I want to make sure that everyone knows than its only been about a week since I sent the payment off. I think I'm good for now I just need to give the juice time to work.

Thanks for the offer.  I'll see how this plays out and maybe take you up on it next week if the need arises.

Argh!     Been soaking the collar and shaft for a week now and still won't budge.  I guess I will need to find someone with a torch,  I don't want to damage the paint on the outer skin.  Any suggestioins for me. Maybe a magic postion that will free the shaft up??

Also I still don't know if I'm a member?  Is there a place where I can look to see if my dues have been received?   Thanks for your help...

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
