Architectdave 1 Posted November 29, 2016 Good morning all, I was successful in replacing my ignition switch and it was faulty. Installed the new one and it starts runs and shuts off. I am however not getting a gen lite any longer and when i check the terminals while running I'm not getting charging voltage. So my question is where do I start with this? Obviously we have 4 components - battery, wiring, regulator and start gen. Battery seems fine, holds a charge and works well. The tractor will run off the battery with no issues. Wiring - I have not torn into it to check every single wire connection of looked frayed wires yet. Regulator? I have no idea about these on the tractors, generator? Technique to check? It does start and run so its functional to a point..... Any advice is appreciated.
PhanDad 3,618 Posted November 29, 2016 I'm guessing the generator charge light wire that runs to the ignition switch isn't connected any more. Here's the wiring diagram for your tractor (much more complicated than my Homelite T-12 wiring that has a "gen light": The "gen light" is wired between the "G" terminal of the voltage regulator and the "run" terminal of the ignition switch. Architectdave 1 Posted November 30, 2016 I'm not concerned with the light as much as i need to fix the charging issue..... Thank you for the diagram I appreciate it. Id there a trouble shooting procedure for the charging systems?
PhanDad 3,618 Posted November 30, 2016 Al Eden wrote about the old S/G with voltage regulator system - available at the old site (might be here somewhere also, but a quick look couldn't find it): http://www.simpletractors.net/service/electrics/electrical_systems.htm There's a troubleshooting section in the S/G section. Chris727 2,022 Posted December 1, 2016 Did you use the correct 4 pin switch?

Architectdave 1 Posted December 1, 2016 I bought my switch from jacks small engines and the switch matched exactly from what I can tell. Same letter designations and everything.... I assume it is correct.
Chris727 2,022 Posted December 3, 2016 Check the bulb in the gen light. If its like an ammeter, current needs to be able to flow through it for the system to charge.
Horvik 31 Posted December 14, 2016 Hello; On the gen light bulb it is a bayonet type. Take it out and check it with an ohmeter, if its bad, there you go. That is what did the trick for me. Good Luck
albj93 4 Posted December 14, 2016 A real quick way to test the starter generator is to MOMENTARILY ground the "F" (field- smaller wire on the starter generator) terminal on the starter generator while the engine is running with a meter connected to the battery. The voltage will shoot up to ~15-17 volts if the generator side is working. When you un-ground the F terminal the voltage should drop down and maintain around ~12.8-13.6 volts. If the voltage is low after this test then the regulator is not working correctly. Without a meter you can listen to the engine and hear it labor slightly due to the increased load or watch the headlights go from dim to bright. Don't do this for very long. Maybe 1-2 seconds..
