Kohler KT19 time to retire

Recommended Posts

Kenh

Well It's time to retire the KT19 in my 7119.  It's leaking oil from the repaired foot that was broken off at some point in it's lifetime and it's starting to smoke with lots of oil in the air filter.  Not sure what I'll replace it with yet.  I'm looking at some used options and would like to re-power with a new Vanguard kit from Small Engine Warehouse.  They have a nice kit which includes the muffler and correct mount plate and drive adapter.  Still at about $1400 shipped not a cheap endeavor.  Some rewiring would also be needed do to the different ignition.

Decisions, decisions.....

I would take the time to check the breather.  The broken foot might be too much of an issue, but if the breather is bad, and they do go bad, it will cause the oil in the filter and burning.  Still available new, about 35 bux, easy enought to replace.

Check the breather, like mentioned above.

Cases go for $50-100 on e-bay all the time.

Sometimes you can see just one side of the case being offered, not sure how that works though.

Set of rings, hone cylinder, reuse everything else, maybe your done?

I always try the low cost road first, maybe a club member close by has done one before?

Is the broken foot on the right side case or the left side.  Many of the right side cases have the hole in the side from a broken rod, while the left side are usually good.  You can check part numbers but I believe the KT19 and KT17 use the same case.

Also if you decide to repower don't forget the value of the KT parts.

Starter $45, Dual Lead Coil $65+, Rectifier $35, Jugs $75 ea., Heads $25 ea., Muffler $75, etc.
